Bibliography and quote exclusion definitions

Originality Check has several exclusion options. When enabled, Originality Check will exclude all content that is between a Beginning Phrase and a Terminating Phrase. Different Turnitin Licenses have access to different exclusion options. Check out the sections that are relevant to you to learn what phrases to use.

Excluding 'Methods and Materials' and 'Abstract' are only available for some license types.

Terminating phrases

After a beginning phrase, you must follow it with a terminating phrase. All of the content between these two phrases will be excluded from the similarity report.

Supported marks


Originality Check will disregard any matches that use the following quotation marks:

"..." «...»  »...« ...』  ...

Unsupported marks


Originality Check will not disregard matches that use the following quotation marks:



Originality Check does not exclude 'quotes' between "quotes". For example: "This text would be excluded 'but this text would not be excluded' then this text would also be excluded."

Block quotations


Originality Check will exclude block quotation (an indented block of text) when the original file is a .doc or .docx file.
