What we've been working on...

Improvements to submissions in Turnitin LTI Turnitin LTI submissions have had a makeover! We've been brushing up on workflows and upcycling the user interface; submissions are now easier to follow and so much more pleasing on the eye!

To bring some clarity to the submission process, you can now see the stage you’re at with our new progress bar. This will guide you through the three stages of submission, ‘Upload’, ‘Review’, and ‘Complete’.

Make sure you don’t leave the submission process until the bar has reached ‘Complete’, otherwise we cannot guarantee your submission was successful!

Once your submission is complete you will see a green tick.

Check out this quick video walkthrough for a visual guide to the new changes.

We’ve also made cloud submission clearer; using the Cloud Submission drop-down, you can choose the drive that you’d like to upload from.

For extra help on how to submit through an LTI integration, please see our guidance on the topic.

What we've been working on...

Turnitin

Administrator Statistics Improvement - You can now view account statistics By Master Class. Previously, downloading the full report By Class would not include any master classes. There is now the option to download the statistical report by Master Class.

The file will contain every master class active on the primary account during the period chosen, and show any relevant usage statistics.

What we've been working on...

Turnitin

Transitioned users from Classic to Feedback Studio - Control your excitement, everyone! We've been making huge efforts to move our users into Turnitin Feedback Studio, following our 1st August deadline (you might've seen the notification in Turnitin). We're pleased to announce that the transition has been successful. Not to worry if you were added to our exception list, as you will certainly not be affected by this change.

Class list pagination issue resolved - Some users noticed an issue when accessing a list of students in a class. After dropping all students from the class, a large number of empty pages remained available. This didn't seem right! It sounded like a pesky bug! So we popped on our extermination suits and got to work.

Implementation of the Turnitin time zone on digital receipts - Turnitin LTI and Canvas don't share the same time zone. In Canvas, you can set your own time zone preference, but Turnitin uses a time zone, usually set during your institution's signup with Turnitin. This confused some of our users.

To ensure that you're aware of the time zone that your Turnitin account is set to, we've added a UTC hour offset alongside the date and time of your submission in your digital receipt, submission info, and when downloading the current view of your paper. We hope this clears things up!

What we've been working on...

Turnitin

Grade book preference values bug - A bug was causing customized grade display preferences to not save on creation. The feature now works as intended.

PeerMark comment deletion bug - In a small number of cases, when deleting a comment in PeerMark, comments would return after deletion. Comments will now delete and not return.

500 Error when an instructor isn't a member of any class - When an instructor who has a Turnitin account but was not a member of any institutional accounts it resulted in a 500 error when they navigated to the Instructor Homepage. One reason this could happen is if an instructor was dropped from an account by an administrator without being a member of any other accounts. A 500 error will now not appear.

LTI

Multiple markers rubric improvement - When a secondary marker accessed an LTI assignment it was possible for them to accidentally remove an attached rubric. Now, when a secondary marker navigates to the rubric section of the LTI interface they will see Other Instructor's Rubric to indicate that a rubric is already attached.

2017 July 18th

The Summer of Love has been about listening to users and improving areas of Turnitin that might have needed a little love. Included in this release are changes to Turnitin Feedback Studio, ETS Grammar check, and making PeerMark easier to use.

What we've been working on...

Turnitin

You can see clearly now - We’ve improved the resolution of documents opened in Turnitin Feedback Studio. Text will now appear crisper and clearer than before, even after you zoom in closely.

Instantaneous grammar feedback - e-rater® grammar and spellcheck comments are now  automatically available for students immediately after submission.

Instructors are still able to view e-rater® feedback, but they are no longer required to view a submission to allow students to access their feedback.

PeerMark simplification - We believe that feedback is at the heart of the writing process. We’ve simplified the process for creating a PeerMark assignment, making it easier than ever for students to review each other's work.

Simpler Distribution Options - The biggest change is the way that papers are distributed between students. You can opt for Turnitin to draw names from a hat (it’s an electronic one with flashing lights, we swear), and automatically assign papers to students. As an instructor, you can set the number of papers you’d like a student to review; we’ll do the rest.

Alternatively, you can allow students to select the paper they’d like to review from those that have already been submitted to the assignment.

Immediate Feedback - When creating a PeerMark assignment, you are now only required to enter a start date and an end date. Student can perform reviews at any time between these two dates. Peer feedback will immediately be released without having to wait for a post date.

Although this update is only available in Turnitin Feedback Studio via turnitin.com or turnitinuk.com for now, we hope to extend the changes to our integrations in the future.

Full report Administrator stat options - Admins now have the ability downland the full report of administartor stats broken down either by account, class, instructor, or integration.

Bug Fixes

Non-admins can set their default user as admin - There had been a bug where non-administrator users were able to set their default user type as admin. We've squished it so users should only see relevant options.

What we've been working on...

Turnitin

Submission preview image bug - Very rarely a bug would cause the preview image on the paper submission screen produce a 500 error. The preview image will now display at all times without error.

Turnitin Feedback Studio launch banner not displaying - We're very excited that everyone will soon get to experience Turnitin Feedback Studio. We think you'll love it! However, the banner letting you know about the general switch to Feedback Studio was not showing for some people when they switched back to Turnitin Classic. The banner will now appear for all users who are due to make the switch.

LTI

Grading template bug - When creating a grading template submission in LTI clicking on the Continue button would make multiple instances of the same submission. On refreshing the assignment inbox they would disappear but would still exist within Turnitin. This bug has now been squished.

Additional privacy notices - We take the data privacy of everyone of our users seriously. As a part of this commitment we have added an additional privacy notice to our login pages and each step of the submission process to provide absolute clarity for users about how we use their data.

The notice reads:

'We take your privacy very seriously. We do not share your details for marketing purposes with any external companies. Your information may be shared with our third party partners ONLY so that we may offer our service.'

What we've been working on...

Turnitin

Paper view request bug - When receiving a paper view request, as a part of the request email, you’d expect to find a plain text version of the requested paper; however, a bug prevented the paper from appearing in the email. We’ve squished this bug! Paper view requests are working as expected.

Submission release option bug - The option to amend or enable automatic sharing of matching papers within your institutional account failed to appear for administrators. Rest assured that if this option was already enabled, users did not lose access to this functionality. The option can be found again in the administrator account settings.

Expired class notification bug - When a class expires you should see a notification whenever you try to access the class homepage or assignment inbox. Notifications were appearing, but they didn’t reflect the error itself. This has now been changed to show the same message consistently.

New feature: Designate a central email address to receive all paper view requests

What?

One of Turnitin’s unique capabilities is identifying potential instances of cross-institutional plagiarism and student collusion. We have long given customers the option to reach out to other institutions via email to request information that could aid in investigating and managing potential academic dishonesty.

You can now choose the email address that paper view requests are sent to when paper source release is enabled. Previously, when an institution received a paper view request, the request was sent only to the instructor who created the assignment. Now, as an account administrator, you can designate a specific email address to receive paper view requests.

Why?

As institutions increasingly develop more structured academic integrity policies and processes, many of our customers have centralized responsibility for managing potential instances of cross-institutional plagiarism and collusion. If this is your policy, we want to give you the opportunity to choose a specific email address for your institution’s paper view requests to be sent to. This allows you to deal with requests as an institution. If you prefer for instructors to receive paper view requests, we’ve kept that option available for you.

Where?

To enable this feature, navigate to the account settings page. Under the Submission Release header, you can opt to continue sending paper view requests to the instructor who initially created the assignment, or you can choose to have paper view requests delivered to a designated email address within your institution.

One more thing...

We've fixed a bug that was causing multiple entries for the same submission in some accounts.

What we've been working on...

Upload Submission button - We've moved the Upload Submission in the LTI Assignment Dashboard from beneath the graphic to being above the graphic. It's a subtle change but will allow you to still see the button while using smaller iframes making things much more usable. It also looks a little prettier but we're biased.

What we've been working on...

  • ‘Join passwords’ are now 'Join keys'

  • ‘Roadmap’ is now 'Suggestions'

  • Fix released for Admin Stats in IE11 and Chrome 38

  • Warning message for attaching a new rubric has changed

  • Fixed a bug with resubmissions in Canvasresubmissions in Canvas

  • Fixed a bug preventing the creation of PeerMark assignments in Blackboard Basic

Turnitin

‘Join passwords’ are now 'Join keys' - We’ve been doing some spring cleaning and changing some of the words we use in Turnitin. During discussions with users, we found that there was confusion with the multiple uses of the term ‘password’ in the system, despite them not actually being passwords, due to them being designed to be shared with other members of your institution for class or account access.

Join passwords are now known as Join keys.
Enrollment passwords are now known as Enrollment keys.

‘Roadmap’ is now 'Suggestions' - We love to hear your feedback and ideas on how we can improve Turnitin. We had found that ‘Roadmap’ didn’t really make much sense for a lot of users. We’ve changed this to ‘Suggestions’, and we welcome any and all that you may have!

If you are an admin or an instructor clicking on the ‘Suggestions’ link, this will log you into our UserVoice portal. In UserVoice, you can view other suggestions that instructors around the world have already made, vote on the suggestions you agree with, and make your own.

Released a fix for Admin Stats in IE11 and Chrome 38 - We recently launched the new and improved Admin Account Statistics and we’ve already received a lot of great feedback! Unfortunately, a bug prevented those using IE11 or Chrome 38 from accessing the statistics page. This bug has now been squished, and IE11 and Chrome 38 users shouldn’t have any more problems.

Warning message for attaching a new rubric has changed - We've changed the messaging displayed when a new rubric is attached to an assignment or when detaching a rubric from an assignment. When a rubric is detached or changed, any feedback left using this rubric is lost. Although we already told users that this data loss would happen, our message wasn’t as clear as it could have been, leading to unintentional data loss.

We’ve updated the message that is shown when removing or attaching a new assignment to be much clearer.

Integrations

Fixed a bug with resubmissions in Canvas - resubmissions in Canvas - If a user tried to download their originally submitted file while resubmissions were enabled for the assignment, a bug presented only the first version of the file for download, rather than the final, resumitted file. This has now been fixed; the user will only be able to download the last file submitted to the assignment.resubmissions were enabled for the assignment, a bug presented only the first version of the file for download, rather than the final, resumitted file. This has now been fixed; the user will only be able to download the last file submitted to the assignment.

Fixed a bug preventing the creation of PeerMark assignments in Blackboard Basic - When trying to create a PeerMark assignment in Blackboard Basic it would result in an error message being shown. A fix for this bug has now been applied and PeerMark assignments are able to be created.

What we've been working on...

Turnitin

  • New feature release of administrator account statistics
  • Resolved a bug detaching the rubric from an assignment
  • Removed the top-level account delete icon from sub-administrator view

Feature release of administrator account statistics - A high-level overview of your account statistics is now available for specific date ranges. Administrators can download detailed usage data in the form of a .CSV file, as well as view graph summaries of the following:

  • Submissions
  • High Similarity Reports
  • Submissions with Feedback

Common Core rubric reports are also available for .CSV download, providing the date range selected is anywhere up to six months.

For guidance on using and interpreting account data, click here.

Removed the top-level account delete icon from sub-administrator view - Sub-administrators who were not the main account administrators appeared to have the option to delete their top-level account. However, during bug testing, it was found that, although the delete icon was visible, the action would not process and an error message would display (phew). We’ve removed the delete icon for top-level accounts from appearing to sub-administrators to avoid any future confusion.

Integrations

Resolved a bug which detached the rubric from an assignment - After an integrations instructor created an assignment with a rubric attached to it, we noticed that a second instructor accessing the assignment saw no rubric attached in the assignment settings, but could still use the rubric for grading. If the second instructor edited and saved over the original assignment settings, this would clear it from the assignment entirely, causing the rubric to disappear from submissions that had already been graded using this rubric. Now, rest assured that rubrics will stay with the assignment when a setting amendment is made by any instructor.

What we've been working on...

Turnitin

Administrator Homepage Bug - When an administrator user set the Administrator Homepage to be the default page for their account they would lose access to that page when they changed the view to the Instructor Homepage. This has been fixed.

Improved Security Questions - We've changed our password reset security questions to better reflect industry standards. When creating a new account we now ask questions with answers that are less readily available on social media, yet are still memorable. Current users can still reset their passwords using their old password and question.

Access QuickMark breakdown from class homepage - Instructors can now access a list of the different QuickMarks used across their class, as well as how frequently these QuickMarks have been used on student papers. The QuickMark breakdown can be found beneath the class title.

LTI Integrations

PeerMark reviews now launch in PeerMark document viewer - As we will soon be transitioning our users to Turnitin Feedback Studio, we thought it wise to move peer reviews out of the Turnitin Classic document viewer. Students can now view their peer reviews within the PeerMark interface. Nothing to worry about; students will still see all of the same information as before! In fact, this is a more consistent experience!

What we've been working on...

Turnitin

Localized date formats - We have updated how we display dates for the localized versions of Turnitin. Chinese Simplified, Chinese Traditional, Japanese, and Korean localizations have been updated to reflect this change.

Previously the dates used the following format:

Chinese Simplified: ‘12日-03月’

Chinese Traditional: ‘12日-03月’

Japanese: ‘12日-03月’

Korean: ‘12일-03월

Now, the dates for these localizations have been changed to the following:

Chinese Simplified: ‘03月12日’

Chinese Traditional: ‘03月12日’

Japanese: ‘03月12日’

Korean: ‘03월 12일’

  • Several security improvements
  • Exclude by small matches is now Exclude by small sources

Exclude by small matches - We felt that 'Exclude by small matches' didn't fully reflect how this feature works so we have changed the wording. When creating a new assignment, or editing an old one, you will be now be given the option to choose if you would like to exclude small sources. Exclusion is by percentage of the source.

What we've been working on...

Turnitin

Password reset error messages - After entering incorrect data during the password reset process (such as an incorrect email address), you might have noticed that the resulting error message would remain on the screen after successfully resetting your password. Sorry about that; we really didn't mean to worry you. Error messages will now clear after being addressed, just as you'd expect them to.

Integrations

  • 502 bad gateway message

  • Switching between Turnitin Classic viewer and Turnitin Feedback Studio

502 Errors - Some users using our Blackboard integrations had difficulty accessing Turnitin and would be presented with a ‘502 Bad Gateway’ error. Our engineers have resolved this.

Switching between Turnitin Classic viewer and Turnitin Feedback Studio - Users may have experienced difficulty switching from the Turnitin Classic viewer to Turnitin Feedback Studio. The ‘Try the New Feedback Studio’ link wouldn’t respond and appeared to be ‘Saving…’, yet failed to update. We’ve fixed this! The switch should now happen seamlessly, so you can go right back to enjoying the Turnitin Feedback Studio.

What we've been working on...

Turnitin

  • Changes to our choice of wording in Turnitin

  • Improvements to translations

  • Extra security added to account creation forms

Changes to our choice of wording in Turnitin - We’ve started our spring cleaning a little early this year by improving some of the language you see when creating a new Turnitin account. You’ll notice that some of the older, clunky language we once used is now a lot clearer and easier to follow. This change will help to onboard members of your institution much more quickly than before! Watch this space for similar changes in future releases.

Improvements to translations - We noticed that text within the Turnitin footer was still awaiting translation, with several English words popping up where you’d least expect them. We apologize for this slip! The English we’ve identified has now been translated in all nineteen non-English languages supported by Turnitin. Please contact us if you happen to identify any non-translated words or phrases when viewing Turnitin in your preferred language.

Screen Shot 2017-02-16 at 16.32.03.png

Extra security added to account creation forms - We’ve added a reCAPTCHA to the bottom of our account creation form for added security.

We haven’t seen any problems with ‘brute force’ attacks, but we’ve added this extra security layer just in case. reCAPTCHA is, as Google puts it, ‘Tough on bots, easy on humans’, and in the vast majority of cases, is as simple as clicking on a checkbox to ensure you are not a robot. If you are a robot please get in touch as we have a tortoise that would like to meet you. reCaptcha is also fully accessible and works with major screen readers. Read more about reCAPTCHA and accessibility.

What we've been working on...

Turnitin

Fixed a bug with class sections - When trying to create class sections within a master class it would result in an error message telling the instructor about the requirements for creating a class section rather than creating one, despite the entered details being correct. This has now been fixed and class sections are created as normal.

What we've been working on...

Turnitin

  • Fixed a bug with class sections
  • Extended the character limit for class title from 100 to 300 characters
  • Changed the color scheme for error messages

Fixed a bug with class sections - When trying to create new class sections, some instructors found that this resulted in errors despite a valid user being added. This was limited to user accounts that had their default role set to 'admin' or 'student'. This problem has now been fixed.

Extended the character limit for class title from 100 to 300 characters - Some users found the 100 character limit for class titles restrictive; we've now extended it to 300 characters. The change hasn’t quite reached our integrations yet, but will be coming soon. Exactly the length of this message!

Changed the color scheme for error messages - Until now, our error messages and success messages all looked the same. This caused confusion, as messages that should have been positive - such as making a successful change to your user profile - would be shown in a red. Error messages remain red and 'positive' messages now appear in green.

2017 January 25th

What we've been working on...

Turnitin

  • We’ve updated our login pages to create a more consistent experience

  • Changed the login page to use HTTPS

  • Removed the ‘Account is nearing its student limit’ notification for instructors

  • Russian and Polish are now out of beta

  • Fixed a bug with allow any file type

Updated our login pages to create a more consistent experience - We’ve updated our login, create an account, and password reset pages to be more consistent with what you might be used to with our main website. All functionality remains the same; things just look prettier now.

Removed the ‘Account is nearing its student limit’ notification for Instructors - Up until now, instructors would see a warning when their account was near to reaching its student limit. As this warning is more aimed at administrators, we have stopped this warning message from appearing to Instructors. Don’t worry, admins! You’ll still be notified if your account is near reaching its limits. If you ever run into this problem, we’ve put together some guidance on how you can best manage your account’s student limits.

Changed login page to use HTTPS - Previously all pages after logging into Turnitin would use HTTPS however the login page itself still used HTTP. Now only HTTPS login pages can be used to access Turnitin. If you had our old page bookmarked you'll automatically be redirected. You can find the login page here.

Russian and Polish are now out of beta  -  We sometimes keep the beta tag on a language for a while to ensure that our translations are properly localized, preventing folks using the localized site from having any problems with using Turnitin.

With this release of Turnitin, we are removing the beta tag for both Russian and Polish; however, we are always happy to hear any feedback if you find something that might read a little oddly.

Fixed a bug with allow any file type - This… unintended feature would potentially result in a submission with less than 20 words trying to still generate a similarity report, causing our system to display a constant ‘Pending’ message.

Now, if a student submits a file with less than 20 words, we’ll show a message, letting them know that a Similarity Report won’t be generated for that submission. Student’s will also now not be stuck in a ‘pending’ limbo, and the Similarity Report column will appear blank.

What we've been working on...

Turnitin

  • Fixed a bug where using non-integer characters for parts of account creation would result in a 500 error
  • We've made improvements to the security of our account join form

Account Creation 500 Error - If a user attempted to use non-numeric characters in the Account ID field, this resulted in a 500 error. When a user now makes this error, they will receive an error message asking them to resolve the issue and try again.

Account Join Form Security - The Password text box of the account join form was previously of the text field type. We have changed this to now be the password field type. Security of accounts remains as strong as ever; however, this change aligns the form with best industry practice and will visually obfuscate the password you have entered while using the form.

Integrations

  • Multi-file upload 403 errors
  • Fixed error callbacks in some integrations to be clearer
  • Cosmetic errors during empty text submissions

Multi-file upload 403 errors - Multi-file uploads would sometimes cause 403 and 500 errors when submitting. This has now been fixed.

Fixed error callbacks in some integrations to be clearer - Sometimes, errors would go unnoticed as each callback was being called twice resulting in a successful state. This has now been fixed so that a correct error status is shown when a callback fails.

Cosmetic errors during empty text submissions - When a user tried to submit to Turnitin using the text box submission method, leaving the text field blank, this would cause some minor cosmetic errors after showing the error message. These have now been fixed.

Fixed a bug with Instructor Expanded Repository Options

When administrators would try to select 'Enable instructor expanded repository options' they would sometimes get an error message when no institutional node existed for an account. This has now been fixed.

Fixed a bug with institutional source release

Requesting to view a paper from a class within your institution, when institutional source release is turned on, would occasionally result in an error. This has now been fixed.

Fixed a bug with user session time outs

We had received several reports of people being timed out prematurely while using Turnitin Feedback Studio, even when they were actively grading. This has now been fixed and users will only be presented with a timeout message when they are inactive for an extended period of time.

Inbox ordering now transfers to Turnitin Feedback Studio

The order in which you sort the assignment inbox will now transfer to when you are using Turnitin Feedback Studio. This allows you to grade papers in the order that best suits you. By deault papers are ordered by highest similarity percentage.

Fixed a bug that affected Similarity Report scores

A bug was introduced into our code during the course of work being done to update our report generation and storage layer on September 29th 2016. The bug affected only an extremely small subset of submissions and resulted in under-reported Similarity Scores. The engineering team fixed the issue on November 29th 2016.  All affected reports have been regenerated.

LTI - Corrected bug with messaging when changing assignment settings

When saving assignment settings, two success messages would be displayed. One message advised 'Submission uploaded successfully' and another stated 'Settings were saved successfully'. This has now been corrected to only show the 'Settings were saved successfully' message.

Fixed a problem with papers appearing as draft submissions

In a small number of cases when a instructor would open a paper they would receive a message saying that it is a draft submission, despite the assignment's settings being single submission only. This has now been resolved.

Fixed a bug where students would open their paper and it would load in text-only view

Students using Moodle Direct V2 when opening their paper from the assignment inbox, by selecting the assignment title, it would load in text-only view. Now when selecting the assignment title the paper will open correctly.

What we’ve been working on...

  • General backend bug fixes

  • We've made an improvement to account authentication error messages

Improvements to Account Authentication Error Messages

As an improved security feature we've changed the messages you may see when trying to login to Turnitin with the wrong information. Previously you'd have been informed of which part of the details you were trying to use were incorrect. While this may have been slightly more convenient we feel that it is far better practice not to display this information. In systems where specific information is given it gives people trying to attack your account much more information in which to guess at your login details.

Improved error messaging

Previously if a student tried to change their email address to an address already stored on the system it would fail without any indication about what went wrong. Now an error message will be displayed informing the student that the email address they have tried to use is already attached to a Turnitin account.

Added support for newer top level domains

From time to time new top level domain extensions are approved. Old favorites such as .com and .co.uk are joined by new top level domain extensions such as .global and .pizza. We have changed the validation on our account creation forms so that non-standard top level domain extensions are now allowed for creating a Turnitin account.

Fixed an LTI assignment due time issue

We've fixed a bug in LTI, affecting the assignment due time. The due time set by an instructor reformatted if the time was a non-multiple of five. For example, if 11:59pm was set as the due time, this would default to 11pm. Turnitin now accepts any due time.

Where a student's Max Grade should appear to them in an LTI assignment, a green tick mark was instead visible to students within the Summary tab of their assignment settings. This tick mark appeared when an instructor applied a 1 or 2 in the assignment's Possible Score field during assignment creation.

We have resolved this issue, with the correct maximum grade now always being available to students via their assignment settings.

New account setup workflow

We've introduced new, simple and straightforward account setup pages, based on feedback from users. This makes it easier to get new staff and students in your institution set up with Turnitin. Previously, we asked new users to follow the password reset workflow to create their password. However, as this created confusion, we've removed all mention of password reset during account setup to improve the onboarding experience.

This new workflow can be accessed via all new user welcome emails. All step-by-step account setup information for all user types has been updated in guides.turnitin.com/manuals.

Note: This workflow change will not affect instructors and students using Turnitin through a learning management system (LMS).

Fixed an issue concerning Baku, Azerbaijan system time in Turnitin

We received a report that the time displayed in our system for Baku (+04:00 GMT) was behind by one hour due to daylight saving time (DST) being canceled. We have now synchronized our system with the timezone of Baku, Azerbaijan.

Turnitin LTI is now WCAG 2.0 AA compliant

We now conform to WCAG 2.0 AA standards of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) when accessing Turnitin using an integration via our LTI route.

Our LTI integrations will include:

  • Screen reader support

  • Keyboard navigation support

  • Skip-to-content links

  • Appropriate contract ratios

  • Consistent navigation

  • Clear headings and labels

As part of this update, the LTI user interface has been refreshed to ensure consistency alongside this newly accessible platform. We have also been able to make the UI mobile responsive to ease the use of the LTI integration via a mobile device.

We received reports that the call-to-action button in welcome emails was not displaying for customers using Outlook 2016 as their email client, due to imaging issues. Fixed an issue causing some users to not receive system emails

We received a number of reports from users, advising us that they have failed to receive system emails, which has subsequently affected their use of the Turnitin service. This included welcome, password reset, and digital receipt emails.

We isolated this incident to users accessing emails through Office 365 and have quickly found a resolve, meaning all system emails are now delivered to users of any email platform without issue.

Improved copy for allowing the switch between Turnitin Feedback Studio and Turnitin Classic

For clarity, we've improved copy surrounding Turnitin Classic in administrator account settings; we want to make it abundantly clear to users that Turnitin Feedback Studio and Turnitin Classic are different iterations of the same product.

This option is available to administrators under Account Settings from the administrator homepage and controls whether instructors and students are able to toggle between the two iterations at their own discretion.

Resolved a bug causing letter grades to appear incorrectly

We received reports of three asterisks (***) displaying in the grade book, when using grading scales and translating a numerical grade into a letter; the same displayed in exported Excel files, too. When multiplying a float by 100 an incorrect float was subsequently calculated, causing comparisons against integer numbers to fail in the grading scales and the numerical grade failing to match a letter. This issue has now been resolved.

Fixed an issue affecting GradeMark report exportation in Google Chrome

We received reports of an issue causing an error message to display when attempting to export rubric/grading form data from the GradeMark report. This error was isolated to Google Chrome. After investigating this, the issue was found to be caused by commas in the filename of the Excel file, as the title of the assignment in question had commas in it. We fixed this issue by quoting the filename so that commas are no longer parsed.

The browser info page is fixed

Users trying to access the Browser Info page were unexpectedly redirected to an Adobe 404 page, rendering the page inoperative. We found this to be a result of an embedded Adobe iframe, which we have now converted into a simple link to Adobe Flash Player help content. Users are now able to view their browser info and access Flash Player guidance without interruption.

Fixed an issue affecting the display of Windows 10 fonts

Our PDF conversion software was found to convert the Windows 10 font, Arial Nova, to an inappropriate, hard-to-read, cursive display font after paper submission.

To resolve this issue, we completed significant testing of Windows 10 fonts, helping us to identify all poorly converted fonts. Once identified, we replaced all poor fonts with similar, easy-to-read alternatives. All future papers, created using a Windows 10 font, can now be viewed with ease in the Turnitin document viewer.

Turnitin's translated matching now supports Slovenian and Slovak

We now support Translated Matching in two additional languages: Slovak and Slovenian. We are currently in the process of amending all textual information related to translated matching, particularly in Turnitin user guidance, to include Slovak and Slovenian.

  • Fixed a bug affecting user role reactivation on LTI launch

Students can launch an LTI assignment regardless of instructor access

Students can now launch into an assignment and trigger its creation; this relieves instructors from being forced to have first interaction with the assignment before students are able to submit.

On first access to an assignment in standard LTI, an assignment is created as a blank assignment, where all settings, including title, start and end date are then set by the instructor. The main reason for this is a result of assignments being created in bulk on the side of the LMS, where the instructor may not have made any input to the assignment and therefore there are no settings attached to it.

Because of this lack of settings, students were not able to access their assignments and begin submitting, as their instructor had made no initial setting contribution. Therefore, as the first person to use the assignment is likely to be a student, students can now launch an LTI assignment, regardless of initial instructor access. In other words, students can now submit to an assignment regardless of instructor access, as the settings are automatically present.

We now require the title, start date, and end date to be passed into the assignment (or the ID of another assignment to copy the settings from); this way, the student can use the assignment properly if they are the first to access it. This update improves the user workflow for both instructors and students during submission periods.

Submission timestamp is passed back to the LMS as part of LTI callback

To provide developers with visibility on accurate submission timestamps, we now pass this information back to the LMS.

Fixed a bug affecting user role reactivation on LTI launch

We have resolved an issue which initiated an error when an instructor tried to launch into an LTI class after being dropped from this class; this was a result of their role being classed as inactive. The error message read: Sorry, we could not process your request. Turnitin assignment could not be created. Instructor does not belong to class. To rectify this, if an instructor has been dropped, on launch, they will now be re-enrolled as an instructor in this class.

Issue resolved which prevented similarity report match exclusions

We have resolved an issue in the document viewer, which prevented users from being able to exclude matches from a similarity report. Attempting to make an exclusion resulted in the user being presented with an update error, which informed them that the request had failed due to a server error. In this instance, the exclusion appeared to have saved, but the overall similarity score did not change. The similarity report now refreshes correctly, and the similarity score drops correspondingly with the excluded sources. This issue was isolated to the TurnitinUK service only.

Fixed a bug affecting administrator statistics

The administrator statistics page was found to contain no figures and the date range picker was not working as expected or failed to show the date at all. This bug has now been resolved. This issue was isolated to the TurnitinUK service only.

New confirm email address field at account creation

We have implemented an email confirmation field to reduce cases where incorrect email addresses are entered at account creation. This caused a rise in support tickets being raised.

To improve the user workflow, instructors, teaching assistants, and students must correctly confirm the email address entered before they can successfully create their account. This will guarantee instant access to Turnitin after registration.

Bug fixed affecting Confirm password field at account creation

When creating a new user via the user creation workflow, the confirm password field failed to compare this to the original. On the basis that all other entered data was accepted by the Turnitin system, a new Turnitin account would be created based without any error checking to confirm that both passwords matched.

This issue has now been resolved. The Confirm password field is compared to the main password field, in order to successfully create a new Turnitin account.

Removed student grade data from the graphing tools page ahead of post date

The graphing tools page allows both students and instructors to view grades in a variety of graphical formats. On this page, we have removed student access to graphs that include data for assignments not yet past their post date; this provided students with insight into their grades ahead of time.

To rectify this issue, assignment data will not be included in students' Turnitin graphs until the post date has passed. As an instructor, however, all assignment data will be included (even for assignments that have not yet passed the post date).

Resolved a server error when attempting to copy classes

We have fixed a bug causing a server error code 500 to appear when attempting to copy a standard class in Turnitin. This affected active and expired class copying and required both a code fix and a database function fix. The copy class feature is now functioning as normal.

Grades now available to students after post date in Blackboard Basic

We have resolved an error in Blackboard Basic, which resulted in the absence of the grade center column on or after the post date; this was regardless of whether the option Display grades to students only on post date was set to true. The grade center column is expected to be hidden automatically until the post date is reached. In this case, the column remained hidden, requiring instructors to manually reveal grades to students. This option is now functioning correctly, and all grades appear as soon as the post date has passed.

Translation improvements to the Feedback Studio toggle

When enabling and disabling the Feedback Studio using the toggle, the body text of the confirmation pop-up box was not translated for all Turnitin-supported languages.

The body text of the toggle notification is now translated for all Turnitin-supported languages.

Reinstated submission IDs into English digital receipts

We have resolved an issue, which caused a student's submission ID to be omitted from their digital receipt email notification. This was a result of object.objectID being dropped from international English and UK English text-only and HTML emails.

Prior to this fix, text-only emails did not include submission IDs. However, as per this release, both international and UK English text-only and HTML digital receipt emails now include object.objectID.

All student digital receipts in international and UK English now resemble the following format, inclusive of the submission ID (object.objectID):

Dear [% user.firstname %] [% user.lastname %]

You have successfully submitted the file "[% object.title %]" to the assignment "[% assignment.title %]" in the class "[% class.title %]" on [% date.uploaded %]. Your submission id is [% object.objectID %]. Your full digital receipt can be downloaded from the download button in your class assignment list in Turnitin or from the print/download button in the document viewer.

What we’ve been working on...

  • Bulk download fixes
  • Assignment creation warning issue
  • Improvements made to our Traditional Chinese Language Interface
  • Improvements and refinements to the Turnitin release process

Bulk download fixes

We have resolved an issue that was causing an error to be generated when trying to bulk download using IE11.

We have resolved an issue where student’s names were not being appended to files when using the bulk download feature.

Assignment creation warning

In a small number of cases, we found that an error message was being displayed when some users created an assignment. This has now been fixed.

Anonymous marking grade display issues

There had been an issue when anonymous marking was turned on for an assignment after the post date had passed whereby grades would be lost. This has now been fixed.

We resolved another issue where the UI would not immediately update when anonymous marking was turned on and the grades would momentarily not be displayed.

Traditional Chinese language interface improvements

We have improved several of the areas within our traditional Chinese language interface to include more accurate translations.

What we’ve been working on...

  • Global Anonymous Marking
  • Various bug fixes

Global Anonymous Marking

As an instructor, anonymous marking masks your student's name and any other identifiable information. If at any point during marking you identify a problem with a submission, you have the ability to reveal the student's name from the Assignment Inbox. When you reveal a student's name an audit trail will be created. You will be required to enter a reason for unveiling a student's name in order for any issues to be properly investigated.

Note: This setting is permanent. If you turn off anonymous marking for a student you will be unable to turn it back on for that student during that assignment.

Email non-submitters for Moodle Basic and Blackboard Basic

Email non-submitters is now available for Moodle Basic and Blackboard Basic, introducing the ability to send a reminder email to students within your class that have not submitted an assignment to Turnitin.Turnitin.

You can send a reminder email at any time during the submission process, and this can be repeated if need be. Additionally, you have the ability to warn late submitters that the due date has passed. Simply click the email non-submitters button from the Assignment Inbox within Blackboard Basic and Moodle Basic to proceed to the email form.

40mb maximum file upload size for all classes

Building on our 1501 release, the increased file size limit has been retroactively applied to all current classes. Now, no changes are necessary to make use of the increased submission size.

What we’ve been working on...

  • Evaluate Excel
  • Language updates
  • Various bug fixes and performance enhancements

Evaluate Excel

Evaluate Excel is the ability to submit, mark, peer review, and originality check Excel files. The file extensions included in this are .xls and .xlsx.

When an Excel file is submitted to Turnitin the service will process the file as though it were any of the other standard file types (the file types which can receive Originality Reports). This means that the service will generate an Originality Report for the file and will create a version of the file that can be marked in GradeMark. The version of the file that can be viewed in the document viewer will look the same as as it would if the Excel file had been saved as a PDF and submitted to Turnitin. Turnitin the service will process the file as though it were any of the other standard file types (the file types which can receive Originality Reports). We highly recommend that users pay attention to the image preview provided in the single file submission to verify that the file is presented in an acceptable manner.  Users can adjust the way the file looks by editing the page setup and print area settings for the file prior to saving it and submitting it to Turnitin.  The file's image will be created in landscape view. Gridlines will be included in the image.Turnitin.  The file's image will be created in landscape view. Gridlines will be included in the image.

NOTE:  Excel files that contain mostly numbers are unlikely to show a large number of matches in their Originality Reports. This is due to the fact that Turnitin will not find matches to stings of text that are heavily numeric. We are currently working on ways to improve our matching algorithms for things like large number strings and code. Improvements in matching for highly numeric Excel files will improve as those changes are added.Turnitin will not find matches to stings of text that are heavily numeric. The Excel file will appear in the Document View as though it was printed in landscape format. The Excel files will be eligible for originality checking, marking, and peer reviewing.

Evaluate Excel will be available in the Moodle, ANGEL, and Blackboard basic integrations and the Moodle Direct V2 integration. Support for this will be offered to other integrations via the LTI compliant API. Excel files that have been submitted will be available for marking within Turnitin for iPad.
