Mahatma Gandhi, who led India’s independence movement in the 1940s and inspired many global civil-rights movements, once said, “The only tyrant I accept in this world is the ‘still small voice’ within me. And even though I have to face the prospect of being a minority of one, I humbly believe I have the courage to be in such a hopeless minority.”

Write about a situation in which someone followed the voice of conscience to take an unpopular or difficult public position. What prompted the person to take a stand? Explain whether any change resulted from his or her being “in such a hopeless minority.”
