ETS e-rater feedback for instructors

The e-rater grammar feedback technology, developed by ETS®, automatically checks submissions to an assignment for grammar, usage, mechanics, style and spelling errors; providing in-depth feedback with on paper marks.

E-rater marks are indicated in purple.

E-rater feedback only appears when enabled for the assignment.

In this guide:

Hiding e-rater feedback categories

The e-rater®sidebar displays each feedback category, a list of the traits for the category and the number of marks for each trait. The marks for a category can be hidden from the paper by deselecting the check box next to the category name.

During assignment creation, you can select which categories are hidden by default for all papers submitted to the assignment.

Dismissing and revealing e-rater marks

  1. e-rater® marks can be dismissed from the Turnitin Viewer by selecting the mark, then selecting Dismiss.
  2. If you dismiss any e-rater marks from the paper, the top of the e-rater side panel will track the number of dismissed marks. You can restore all dismissed marks by selecting the Reveal All button.

Adding comments to e-rater marks

  1. To add an additional comment to the e-rater mark select the Add comment text box and start typing. Select anywhere outside of the text box to save the comment.
  2. You can edit the comment in the same way you added a comment to the mark.
  3. To delete the comment, return to the mark, select the text box, highlight all text, and press the delete or backspace button on your keyboard.
  4. A speech bubble alongside the e-rater mark allows you and your students to identify whether or not a comment has been added to the mark.

Viewing the writer's handbook

Both instructors and students can view the Turnitin writer's handbook to better understand the available e-rater® marks for each level of education.

  1. Within each e-rater® mark, you'll find the View Handbook button.
  2. Navigate freely through the handbook (don't forget to select the appropriate education level first.)

When is e-rater feedback released to students?

e-rater® grammar and spell check comments are automatically available for students immediately after submission.

Instructors are able to view e-rater® feedback, but they are are not required to view a submission to allow students to access their feedback.

It may take up to a minute for the e-rater feedback to load onto the paper.
