Managing QuickMarks

In this guide:

A QuickMark standard editing mark is a commonly used or standard mark that can be used by an instructor when editing or grading papers. QuickMarks are organized into sets, which administrators can create and share through their QuickMark Library. Turnitin provides instructors with several sets of default QuickMark comments.

Adding QuickMarks to an existing set

Marks in the QuickMark Library can be added to other sets to provide instructors with the ability to customize their personal QuickMark sets. When a QuickMark is added to another set, the same QuickMark will appear in both the new set and the old set. The user can copy one, multiple, or all of the QuickMarks from a set at the same time.

Adding a single mark

  1. Select the name of the set containing the QuickMark to be copied.
  2. Select the QuickMark to copy.
  3. Select + Add to set located at the bottom of the third panel. This will activate a dropdown with a list of all sets in this account.
  4. Select which set to add this QuickMark to from the dropdown. The QuickMarks will now appear in the selected set.

Copying multiple marks in one set

  1. Select the set containing the QuickMarks to be copied.
  2. Select which QuickMarks to copy. To copy all the QuickMarks in the set, choose the Select all link at the top of the center panel. A dropdown will appear in the rightmost panel.
  3. Select more than one mark by holding the shift key, the command (cmd) key on a Mac, or the control (Ctrl) key on a PC while selecting marks.
  4. Using the dropdown list located in the rightmost panel, select which set to add the copied QuickMarks to.
  5. Select the + Add to set button. The QuickMarks will now appear in the selected set.

Editing QuickMarks

QuickMarks can be edited from within the QuickMark Manager.

Any edits that are made to a QuickMark are applied to every instance where this mark appears in your students’ papers.

  1. Access the QuickMark Manager from the Instructor homepage or while viewing a student paper.
  2. From the QuickMarks column, select the QuickMark you’d like to edit and select the pencil icon in the third column.
  3. Enter your changes into the form fields on the right.
  4. Once you are finished editing the QuickMarks, select the Update button to save. Choose Cancel to discard any changes.

Instructors may only edit QuickMark sets and marks that they have created. QuickMark sets with a lock icon to the right of the set name cannot be modified, as they are provided by Turnitin or the account administrator.

Searching for QuickMarks

  1. To quickly locate a QuickMark, you can perform a search using the QuickMark Manager.
  2. From the top of the third column in the QuickMarks Manager, select the search input and start typing a search keyword.
    • The QuickMarks column will automatically populate with results based on your search.
  3. To clear your search, select the X at the right of the search input.
  4. Search results reflect terms from the title and content fields of a QuickMark.

Archiving QuickMarks

Archiving a QuickMark will remove it from all the QuickMark sets in which it currently resides. By archiving a QuickMark, it appears in the Archived folder at the bottom of the list of sets in the Quickmark Manager. It’s useful to archive QuickMarks you no longer need.

You are only able to archive QuickMarks from custom sets. You are unable to archive individual QuickMarks from Turnitin default sets. However, you are able to add QuickMarks to a new set and hide a set completely.

  1. From the QuickMarks Manager, select the set your QuickMark currently belongs to.
  2. From the QuickMarks column, select the QuickMark you’d like to remove.
    • To select multiple marks, hold cmd (Mac) or ctrl (PC) while you make your selections. Or, to select all the marks in between two QuickMarks, select the highest mark in the list you want to remove and then hold shift and select the lowest QuickMark in the list to be removed. All QuickMarks in between will be highlighted.
  3. Select Archive at the bottom right of the QuickMark details.

Restoring archived QuickMarks

After you have archived a QuickMark, you can restore it later if needed.

  1. From the bottom of the Sets column in the QuickMark Manager, select the Archived folder.
  2. From the QuickMarks column, select the archived QuickMark you’d like to restore.
  3. To restore all the archived marks, choose the Select all link.
    • Select multiple QuickMarks, hold cmd (Mac) or ctrl (PC) while you make your selections. Or, to select all the QuickMarks in between two marks, select the highest mark in the list you want to remove and then hold shift and select the lowest QuickMark in the list to be removed. All QuickMarks in between will be highlighted.

  4. From the third column, select the Restore option.

The marks will now appear in the same sets as before they were archived.
