Why does our institution need to upgrade from LTI 1.1 to Turnitin Advantage?
As part of Turnitin’s commitment to providing the best customer experience and helping you get the most out of our solutions, we are encouraging our customers to move to Turnitin Advantage. This move provides additional security improvements as well as additional enhancements such as roster syncing, easier assignment creation, and better grade pass back service. It also provides assignment choices within one integration so you can tailor assignments to fulfill the needs and objectives of the course. Turnitin Advantage options include:
- New Standard Assignment which uses Turnitin’s new grading and feedback features
- This assignment type will also surface in Speedgrader for those institutions that rely on Canvas rubrics for grading assignments.
- Classic Standard Assignment which includes options for Peermark for peer review
- This assignment type does not surface in SpeedGrader.
- Multi-part Assignment which allows you to create assignments with multiple activities to fit your unique learning goals and strategy and provide feedback and grades on each part of the assignment individually.
- Clarity Assignment (an add-on) which gives students a focused space to compose their essays and use AI responsibly while allowing you to gain deep insights into your students’ writing process.
What is the end of support date for the LTI 1.1 integration?
Canvas has announced the end of life date for the LTI 1.1 integration for December 31, 2027. We recommend institutions start internal discussions soon to determine the best timeline for upgrading the institution.
How does this affect Turnitin LTI 1.1 enabled assignments in my past courses?
This change does not affect previous Turnitin LTI 1.1 enabled assignments in your past courses. You can still access those past assignments and reports as needed.
How does this affect new Turnitin assignments created in my current courses?
Because Turnitin Advantage is deep linking, creating the assignment is a more streamlined process (resulting in less clicking and duplication of assignment information in both Turnitin and Canvas). For more information, view our Canvas Quickstart guidance .
What are the enhancements that I will gain with Turnitin Advantage?
- Access to the new Standard Assignment and Multi-part assignment types which were designed from the beginning with accessibility and accommodation in mind
- Access to the Clarity Assignment type add-on and the Paper to Digital Assignment type add-on
- Overall improved user interface for you (and your students) including seeing at a glance which students have submitted or not to the assignment via the Assignment Inbox
- Easier assignment creation workflow
- Access to the Assignment Copy tool to copy Turnitin Assignment types and to upgrade your existing LTI 1.1 assignments to the New Standard Assignment type
- Access to the Submission Management tool to make and track paper deletion requests and look up submissions and reports outside of the assignment
- Ability to resync grades to the LMS gradebook as needed
- Access to assignment level insights within the LTI inbox including robust assignment analytics and Flags
- Roster syncing function that updates every time a Turnitin assignment is launched. Because this is based on the Canvas course roster, this means that students that have been added to the class or dropped from the class will show in the assignment inbox automatically
- Ability to submit a Turnitin assignment on behalf of a student as needed
- Ability to grade using Canvas rubrics in Speedgrader if needed for new Turnitin assignment types
- Access to additional assessment types and features when they become available (i.e. AI powered first pass feedback, feedback reminders for students, quick past feedback reference for instructors, rubric import tool, Turnitin in Canvas Discussions, etc.)
What changes to existing workflows do I need to be aware of?
Student submissions for new Turnitin Assignment types will surface in Speedgrader which means you can use Canvas rubrics to grade if needed. However, classic Turnitin Assignments do not have this ability.
In addition, a report score icon will not show in the Canvas gradebook for either you or your students for Turnitin assignments. However, a submission indication will still be there.
Once your institution has completed the upgrade, viewing past LTI 1.1 enabled assignments can only be done from the Turnitin inbox and not through Grades or Speedgrader.
Dropped or deactivated students will be removed from the Turnitin assignment inbox. If you need to see a submission made by students that have been dropped from your course, please use the Submission Management tool.
How does this affect Turnitin LTI 1.1 enabled assignments that have been copied from my past courses into current courses?
Past LTI 1.1 assignments will launch automatically as classic Turnitin assignments in the current course. Alternatively, you can use Turnitin’s Assignment Copy tool to upgrade your past LTI 1.1 assignments to the new Standard Assignment type. Please refer to our guidance for using Turnitin assignment copy and for LMS course copy recommendations .
What happens to QuickMarks and rubrics that I have already created?
Your QuickMarks, rubrics, and grading forms that have been saved will be available to you for your new assignments. You can also export QuickMarks and rubrics and grading forms and import them as needed. Below are links for doing that:
If there is an issue with accessing them, please contact Turnitin support for assistance.
Will the reports look different?
Reports for new Standard assignments have the new enhanced report view . However, it is possible that your Classic Assignments may still be using the classic report view .
