This guide introduces instructors to the Student Writing assignment with an overview of key features for instructors and students.
In this guide:
What is Student Writing?
Turnitin Clarity’s Student Writing provides a dedicated writing space for students to draft assignments within the platform. Designed to support all types of writing—from essays to reflections—it offers instructors visibility into how students approach and develop their work, helping protect academic integrity.
The Writing Report is generated once the student submits on or after the due date and gives instructors insight into the student's process from first keystroke to final submission. It is not available during the drafting period.
Features for instructors
Within the Writing Report, instructors can:
- Get insights into your students’ writing journey from first draft to final submission.
- Check flagged writing signals.
- Review focused writing insights.
- Explore the process through a timeline.
- View students’ AI Chat activity.
- Access the integrity insights with Turnitin’s Similarity and AI Writing Reports, based on the institution’s license.
- Navigate to Feedback Studio to review and respond to student work.

- Run the grammar check at any time before the due date to get suggestions to improve punctuation, grammar, and mechanics.

- See and reference the assignment instructions side-by-side within the writing space.
- Download a PDF that reflects what’s shown in the editor.
- They don’t need to select Submit to do this, and they can print the downloaded PDF from their browser.
- Submit their document.
- Students may submit or resubmit their document before the due date.
- Students can submit one time after the due date, but assignments will be marked late in the Submission list.
