Understanding resubmissions in Turnitin Clarity

This guide helps instructors understand what students experience when resubmitting an assignment in Turnitin Clarity. It explains when resubmissions are allowed, how often students can resubmit, and how the system handles feedback and reports after each attempt.

In this guide:

How resubmissions work

Resubmission availability depends on the assignment settings selected during setup.

  • Students can only resubmit before the due date.
  • If resubmissions are enabled, students may submit their assignment up to three times within a 24-hour period.
  • Each new submission replaces the previous version of the student’s work.

These settings appear in the assignment details and the Instructions tab within the student writing space.

What students see when resubmissions are enabled

  1. When resubmissions are allowed, students can open their assignment from the Assignment Dashboard and select Edit submission in the writing space.
  2. Before submitting, students see a confirmation modal explaining that:
    1. The new submission will replace the existing document.
    2. Their instructor will see the latest submission, Writing Report, Similarity Report, and AI writing report (as applicable).
    3. They can submit up to three times within a 24-hour period.
  3. After confirming, students receive a Submission received message and see the Last submitted field update with the most recent date and time.

What happens when students reach the 24-hour attempt limit

  1. When a student reaches their final allowed submission within a 24-hour period, a warning modal appears with the message: “You have 1 resubmission left. Once the limit is reached, you’ll need to wait until [date and time submission becomes available] to submit again.”
  2. Students can choose Continue to resubmit to proceed with that final attempt.
  3. After the third submission:
    1. The Resubmit button becomes disabled.
    2. The system displays a reminder of when the next submission window begins.
    3. Students can still make edits in the writing space, but those edits will not be evaluated until they resubmit.

How resubmissions affect feedback and reports

  1. Each new submission overwrites all previous versions, including instructor feedback and the prior Writing Report.
    1. Once a student resubmits, the original Writing Report is replaced with a new one.
    2. Any QuickMarks, comments, or grades on the previous submission are no longer visible to the student or instructor.
    3. The Writing Report and submission timestamp update automatically.
  2. To maintain version tracking, instructors may want to note or download key feedback before a student’s next resubmission.
