This is a guide for instructors to help you understand how to use templates within Clarity assignments. Templates give students a structured starting point when they begin writing.
In this guide:
- Add a template to a Clarity assignment
- Edit or delete a template
- What students see
- Templates in the Writing Report
Add a template to a Clarity assignment
Add a template while creating a Clarity assignment to provide content for students in their writing space.
- Create a Clarity assignment and enter the assignment details.
- Under Template, select Create.
- Add the content you want students to start with in the writing space.
- Select Add Template.
This will open the template editor. From here, you can name the template by selecting the name in the top right corner.
- Create your template using the toolbar options.
- Before you add the template, you can preview it using the Preview button.
- To download your template as a pdf, select the download icon.
- When you have finished creating the template, select Add Template to return to the assignment.
The template name appears under Template once it has been added.
If you create a template after the assignment start date, you will be asked to confirm before continuing. The template will only be added for students who have not already started the assignment.
Edit or delete a template
You can edit or delete a template after adding it to an assignment.
Before the assignment start date, you can make changes to the template and select Update Template to save them. You can also delete the template from the assignment.
After the assignment start date, Clarity asks you to confirm before editing or deleting the template. Any changes only apply to students who have not started the assignment. Students who have already started continue using the template that was available when they began.
What students see
When a template is included in an assignment, its content automatically appears in the student's writing space when they begin.
Students can edit the template content in the same way as other content in their Clarity assignment.
Templates in the Writing Report
Templates are identified separately from student writing in the Writing Report:
- Writing space playback: Template content appears at the beginning of the playback and is highlighted in green.
- Template word count: The Observations section shows the number of words included in the original template.
