Google Classroom FAQ for Turnitin Feedback Studio

What is the Google Classroom integration and what problem does it solve?

The Google Classroom integration allows instructors and students to use Turnitin Feedback Studio directly inside Google Classroom.

Many institutions use Google Classroom to manage classwork, but still rely on Turnitin separately for submission, similarity checking, feedback, and grading. This can create extra steps for both instructors and students.

With the integration, Turnitin is added as an attachment to a Google Classroom assignment so users can stay in Google Classroom while still using Turnitin workflows and features.

Do instructors need to create new classes in Google Classroom?

No. Instructors can use the integration in their existing Google Classroom classes. The setup does not require them to create new classes.

Can instructors use existing Turnitin rubrics in the integration?

Yes. Once the integration is linked to the correct Turnitin sub-account, instructors can use existing Turnitin rubrics that are already associated with that organization.

Which Google Classroom classwork types support Turnitin?

Only Assignments are supported. An error page will be shown when attaching the add-on to other classwork types or announcements.

Can instructors create Turnitin classic assignments?

No. The Google Classroom integration does not support Classic Standard Assignments.

Only the assignment types enabled in the connected Turnitin account can be used. For standard assignments, only New Standard Assignment is supported.

Which instructors can add Turnitin assignments in Google Classroom?

Instructors must have access to the Turnitin Classroom add-on in Google Workspace and any required Google licensing or permissions configured by their institution.

Does the Turnitin start date control when the Classroom assignment becomes visible?

No. The Turnitin start date controls when students can begin submitting to the Turnitin assignment.

The visibility and scheduling of the Google Classroom assignment itself are controlled in Google Classroom.

If an instructor grades in Turnitin, does the grade pass back to Google Classroom?

Yes. When a grade is entered in Turnitin, it is sent back to Google Classroom as a draft grade.

Grade updates in Google Classroom may not appear immediately. There can be a short delay before the updated grade appears.

When do students see their grades and feedback?

The Feedback release date in Turnitin controls when students can see their feedback and grade in the Turnitin workflow.

Students access their Turnitin feedback by opening the Turnitin attachment in their Google Classroom assignment.

The Feedback release date does not control when grades become visible in the Google Classroom interface. Instructors must still return grades in Google Classroom before students can see them there.

What is the recommended grading workflow when using Turnitin Feedback Studio in Google Classroom?

The recommended workflow is for instructors to begin in Google Classroom, open the Turnitin attachment, and complete grading and feedback in Turnitin.

If Turnitin is your institution’s source of truth for grading and feedback, instructors should avoid entering grades directly in Google Classroom.

How do students submit work?

Students must select the Turnitin attachment inside the Google Classroom assignment. This launches the Turnitin submission workflow, where they can upload and submit their work for Turnitin processing.

Can students upload directly to the normal Google Classroom assignment instead?

Students can still upload files to the native Google Classroom submission area, but Turnitin cannot process files submitted there.

For similarity checking, AI writing detection, and Turnitin grading and feedback workflows, students must submit through the Turnitin attachment.

We recommend that institutions clearly instruct students to submit through the Turnitin attachment.

Can students submit from Google Drive?

Yes. In the Turnitin submission workflow, students can upload work using the usual submission methods, including selecting files from Google Drive.

Will instructors still need to use the Turnitin website?

No, not for normal assignment workflows.

Instructors access the Turnitin inbox and grading experience by selecting the Turnitin attachment in Google Classroom. Some parts of the workflow may open in a new tab, but the experience still begins in Google Classroom.

Can instructors attach Turnitin assignments on mobile devices?

No. Google Classroom add-ons are not supported when creating or attaching assignments on mobile devices.

Can students use Turnitin attachments on Chromebooks?

Yes. Chromebook devices are supported.

Can students use Turnitin attachments on mobile devices?

Turnitin workflows are supported on tablet devices, but are not fully supported on small-screen mobile phones.

Can Turnitin grading be disabled if an institution wants instructors to grade directly in Google Classroom?

No. Turnitin grading cannot currently be disabled in the integration.

Can different schools within a district use different Turnitin sub-accounts?

Yes, in some cases.

Because the Turnitin add-on is deployed at the Google Workspace hosted domain level, each unique domain or subdomain can be deployed to its own Turnitin sub-account.

For example, if students use addresses such as studentname@students.districtname.org and faculty use addresses such as teachername@districtname.org, each domain structure may require its own dedicated Turnitin sub-account.
