In this guidance, we will provide advice on how to upgrade to Turnitin Advantage (if your institution is not already using it), how to enable Document Processor with that integration, and how to migrate your existing Plagiarism Framework enabled assignments in order to take full advantage of the Turnitin features available to you. These directions apply for Canvas hosted clients only.
Below are the possible integration pathways your Canvas hosted institution might have:
- Your institution uses both the Plagiarism Framework and Turnitin Advantage (LTI 1.3) integrations and would like to enable Document Processor
- Your institution uses Plagiarism Framework only and would like to move to Turnitin Advantage (LTI 1.3)
- Your institution uses both the Plagiarism Framework and LTI 1.1 integration and would like to upgrade to Turnitin Advantage (LTI 1.3)
Your institution uses both the Plagiarism Framework and Turnitin Advantage (LTI 1.3) integrations and would like to enable Document Processor
If you are already using Turnitin Advantage (LTI 1.3) to access the Turnitin assignment workflow as well as Plagiarism Framework for the ability to add Turnitin within the Canvas assignment workflow, the Canvas admin needs to:
- Enable Document Processor
- Migrate the existing Plagiarism Framework assignments so that they are enabled for Document Processor instead
To confirm that you have installed the Turnitin Advantage (LTI 1.3) assignment creation workflow for instructors, check that there is an option to access Turnitin on the Assignments page in the Course Assignments Menu.
And there is also an option for instructors to add Turnitin to a Canvas assignment through the Plagiarism Review field (when Submission Type is Online and File upload or text entry or both are allowed as Online Entry Options).
Enable Document Processor
To enable Document Processor, go to settings, choose the Feature Options tab, and find the Document Processor option. Make sure it is on.
You can enable Document Processor at the course level, the subaccount level, as a choice for instructors to try this out themselves, or at the root level for everyone to have access to it. However, for migrating your Plagiarism Framework enabled assignments, Document Processor has to be enabled at the account or subaccount level as migration is not available at the course level.
With this, your instructors now have expanded choice on how they want to use all the Turnitin features available to you whether by the Turnitin assignment workflow or the Canvas assignment workflow.
Migrate your existing Plagiarism Framework assignments that have been enabled for Turnitin
To begin the migration, go to Apps and click Manage.
Locate Turnitin in the list and click the name itself.
On this page, you can see where your Turnitin Advantage (LTI 1.3) integration has been deployed. Please note the Migrate button at the top.
When you click the migration button, you can choose to migrate your Plagiarism Framework assignments all at once or by individual subaccounts.
Once the migration has occurred, if you go back to the assignment that previously had Plagiarism Framework enabled for it and click edit, you will find the Document Processor option enabled instead.
Document Processor shows up as an option for instructors to add a third party tool to a Canvas assignment if the Submission Type is online and file upload or text entry or both are chosen as online entry options.
Turnitin is one of the options to add to your Canvas assignment.
The reports show in SpeedGrader for easy reference.
Most migrations finish in less than an hour and you can choose to get an email from Canvas once it is complete. After you select the migration button and the migration starts, Turnitin reports will not be visible in SpeedGrader until the migration is finished. Once the migration is finished, all past reports to Plagiarism Framework enabled assignments will still be accessible via SpeedGrader.
The migration from Plagiarism Framework to Document Processor will not affect assignments created using the Turnitin assignment workflow (i.e. those created using the Course Assignments Menu). You will continue to see Turnitin as an option in that menu. In addition, instructors will see Turnitin as an option in the Canvas assignment workflow under Document Processor. There will no longer be a Plagiarism Framework option.
The Canvas admin will still see the Plagiarism Framework integration listed under view app configuration. There is no need to delete it.
If you experience issues with your migration, there is a rollback option that Canvas Support can assist you with.
Your institution uses Plagiarism Framework only and would like to move to Turnitin Advantage (LTI 1.3)
If you have the ability to enable Turnitin for Canvas assignments through the Plagiarism Framework option only, the Canvas admin will need to work with the Turnitin admin to:
- Add the Turnitin Advantage (LTI 1.3) app to the Canvas environment
- Enable Document Processor
- Deploy the Turnitin Advantage (LTI 1.3) app
- Migrate the existing Plagiarism Framework assignments so that they are enabled for Document Processor instead
To confirm that you only have the option to add Turnitin to a Canvas assignment via Plagiarism Framework workflow for instructors, create a Canvas Assignment, under Online Entry Options, choose Submission Type to be Online File upload or text entry or both and check that you have the ability to choose Turnitin via the Plagiarism Review dropdown.
Add the Turnitin Advantage (LTI 1.3) app
To add the Turnitin Advantage (LTI 1.3) app, as the Canvas admin, go to Apps. Click Discover
and type in Turnitin in the field.
Then click on the Turnitin option.
Click Install.
Then Install App.
Make sure the app is unlocked and available at the root level.
If you need this app to be available for just certain Canvas subaccounts, click on the pencil icon and make sure it is not available at the Canvas root level. Click Save.
Then click Add Exception.
Choose the subaccounts or courses this app should be available for instead.
With this, your instructors now have expanded choice on how they want to use all the Turnitin features available to you whether by the Turnitin assignment workflow or the Canvas assignment workflow.
Deploy the Turnitin Advantage (LTI 1.3) app
To deploy the app, from the Assignments page, choose + Assignment. Fill out the Assignment name field. Make sure that Submission type is set to Online and that File uploads, Text entry, or both are checked under Online Entry Options.
Scroll down to the bottom and click on Add Document Processing App.
Click the Turnitin option.
Log in as if you are logging into home.turnitin.com.
Enter in the login passcode that was sent to the Turnitin admin email associated with the account and click Submit.
Choose +Create new.
Find the account you want to link it to in the list. Click the radio button in front of the account and click Next.
Name the deployment and click Next.
Confirm the deployment.
You will get a success indication. Once this is done, you can click the X to exit.
When you click it, you can choose to migrate your Plagiarism Framework assignments all at once or by individual subaccounts.
Once the migration has occurred, if you go back to the assignment that previously had Plagiarism Framework enabled for it and click edit, you will find the Document Processor option enabled instead.

After you select the migration button and the migration starts, Turnitin reports will not be visible in SpeedGrader until the migration is finished. Once the migration is finished, all past reports to Plagiarism Framework enabled assignments will still be accessible via SpeedGrader.
Instructors will see Turnitin as an option under the Course Assignments Menu on the Assignment page so they can use the Turnitin assignment workflow if they would like to try that out. They will also have access Turnitin tools such as the Submission Management tool which allows for report look ups (outside of the assignment) and paper deletion requests (which go to the Turnitin admin).
The Canvas admin will still see the Plagiarism Framework integration listed under view app configuration. There is no need to delete it.
If you do have experience issues, there is a rollback option that Canvas Support can assist you with.
Your institution uses both the Plagiarism Framework and LTI 1.1 integration and would like to upgrade to Turnitin Advantage (LTI 1.3)
If you have the ability to enable Turnitin for Canvas assignments through both the Plagiarism Framework option as an External Tool from the Submission type options, the Canvas admin will need to work with the Turnitin admin to:
- Confirm the Turnitin account id that is linked to the existing LTI 1.1 integration
- Delete the LTI 1.1 integration
To confirm that your institution has installed Turnitin via LTI 1.1, create a Canvas assignment and choose External Tool from the Submission Type options.
There will be two Turnitin options showing in the list.
The second option is for enabling Turnitin for a Canvas assignment. To confirm that you have this option, create a Canvas assignment, choose Submission Type to be Online File upload or text entry or both (under Online Entry Options) and check that you have the ability to choose Turnitin via the Plagiarism Review dropdown.
Check the Turnitin account ID that is connected to the LTI 1.1 integration
To upgrade from LTI 1.1 to Turnitin Advantage (LTI 1.3) with Document Processor capabilities, you will need to use the SAME Turnitin account that was used for the LTI 1.1 integration. If you are not sure which one that is, as the Canvas admin, go to Settings, choose the Apps tab, and choose View App Configuration.
Select the gear sign then Edit.
The Turnitin account is listed in the Consumer Key field. Please make a note of it. While here, we recommend renaming your LTI 1.1 integration as that will make it easier to identify for deletion later.
Add the Turnitin Advantage (LTI 1.3) app
As the Canvas admin, go to Apps. Click Discover and type in Turnitin.
Then click on the Turnitin option.
Click Install.
Then Install App.
Make sure the app is unlocked and available at the root level.
If you need this app to be available for just certain Canvas subaccounts, make sure it is not available at the Canvas root level by clicking on the pencil icon. Click Save.
Then click Add Exception.
Choose the subaccounts or courses this app should be available for.
Enable Document Processor
Now that you have installed Turnitin Advantage (lTI 1.3), you can enable Document Processor. Go to Settings, choose the Feature Options tab, and find the Document Processor option. Make sure it is on.

Deploy the Turnitin Advantage (LTI 1.3) app
Go into a course at the root level or the subaccount level and click Assignments. From the Course Assignments Menu, choose Turnitin.
Log in as if you are logging into home.turnitin.com.
Enter in the login passcode that was sent to the Turnitin admin email associated with the account and click Submit.
Choose +Create new.
Find the account you want to link it to in the list (the same account used for LTI 1.1). Click the radio button in front of the account and click Next.
Name the deployment and click Next.
Confirm the deployment.
You will get a Success indication. Once this is done, you can click the X to exit.
