Configuring Turnitin Advantage (LTI 1.3) for Feedback Studio in a Canvas-hosted production environment

This guide is for new users of Turnitin who want to integrate Turnitin Advantage (LTI 1.3) with a Canvas-hosted production environment. If you already have existing Turnitin integrations in your Canvas environment (such as LTI 1.1 or Plagiarism Framework), please refer to the guidance for existing integrations for assistance.

This guide explains how to enable both the Turnitin assignment workflow and the Canvas assignment workflow through a single integration.

If you use open-source or self-hosted Canvas, or need to tightly control placements, please follow this configuration guide instead .

Both the Canvas admin and the Turnitin admin are required to complete this integration. If these are different people, they should work together to ensure the integration is configured correctly.

If you would like to test Turnitin Advantage (LTI 1.3) in Canvas, use your Canvas beta environment and follow this configuration guide . We do not recommend using your Canvas test environment because it does not support all Turnitin Advantage features, including the Document Processor workflow.

Installing the Turnitin app

Select Apps , then open the Discover tab. Search for Turnitin and select it from the results.

Select Install .

Select Install App .

Make sure the app is available and unlocked.

If you want to limit access to the Turnitin app to specific subaccounts or courses, you can change its availability at the root account level. Select the pencil icon for the Turnitin app in the root account.

Choose Not Available , then select Save .

Select Add Exception .

Choose the subaccounts or courses that need access to the app.

Deployment

Open a Canvas course where Turnitin Advantage (LTI 1.3) is enabled at the root, subaccount, or course level, then select Assignments . From the Course Assignments Menu , choose Turnitin .

Log in using the same process as home.turnitin.com .

Enter the login passcode sent to the Turnitin admin email address associated with the account, then select Submit .

Select +Create new .

Find the Turnitin account you want to link in the list. Select the radio button next to the account, then select Next .

Enter a name for the deployment (we recommend "Turnitin Advantage"), then select Next .

Confirm the deployment.

Once the success message appears, select X to exit. Instructors will not need to repeat this process once the deployment is complete.

If multiple schools share a Canvas environment but use separate Turnitin accounts, you must make the app unavailable at the root level and enable it for each relevant Canvas subaccount. You must then complete the assignment creation process in one course within each subaccount to link it to the appropriate Turnitin account.

To enable the Document Processor workflow (optional), go to Settings and choose the Feature Options tab. Find Document Processor and make sure it is enabled.
