Configuring Turnitin Advantage (LTI 1.3) for Feedback Studio in a Canvas-hosted beta environment

You can install Turnitin Advantage (LTI 1.3) in a Canvas test environment, but the Document Processor workflow is not supported. To test the Document Processor workflow outside your Canvas production environment, install Turnitin Advantage (LTI 1.3) in your Canvas beta environment instead.

We recommend creating a new Turnitin subaccount to test the Turnitin Advantage (LTI 1.3) integration. Do not use the same Turnitin account associated with your existing LTI 1.1 integration in your production environment.

If you're unsure which Turnitin account is linked to your Canvas beta or production environment, you can check as a Canvas admin:

  1. Go to Settings, then select the Apps tab.
  2. Select View App Configurations.
  3. Select the gear icon next to your Turnitin LTI 1.1 integration, then choose Edit.
  4. Locate the Consumer key. This is your Turnitin account ID.

Both the Canvas admin and the Turnitin admin are required to fully configure the Turnitin Advantage (LTI 1.3) integration.

Installing the Turnitin app

Select Apps, then open the Manage tab and select Install a New App.

Under Select LTI version, choose LTI 1.3. Then, under Install Method, choose Manual from the dropdown menu.

Enter a name for the app (we recommend "Turnitin"), then select Next.

Keep the Canvas tab open. In a new tab, go to home.turnitin.com and log in.

If you haven't already, create a Turnitin subaccount to link to your Canvas beta environment. This must be a different account from the one linked to your Canvas production environment.

Enter a name for the account, then select Create Account.

Add yourself or another user as the account admin. Select the checkbox to manage integrations, then select Add admin.

Select Integrations, then LTI 1.3.

Select Get Started.

Choose Other from the dropdown menu.

Enter a name for the registration.

Scroll down to the Turnitin Feedback Studio section and copy the Launch URL/Tool Redirect URL.

Return to the Canvas beta tab and paste the URL into the Redirect URIs field.

Return to the Turnitin tab and copy the Target Link URI. Paste it into the Default Target Link URI field in Canvas.

Return to the Turnitin tab and copy the Login Initiation URL. Paste it into the OpenID Connect Initiation URL field in Canvas.

Set the JWK Method to Public JWK URL. Return to the Turnitin tab and copy the Tool Public Keyset URL. Paste it into the JWK URL field in Canvas.

In the Domain field, enter turnitin.com. Leave the custom fields blank, then select Next.

Under Permissions, enable the first 12 options, then select Next.

Under Data Sharing, choose All user data from the dropdown menu, then select Next.

Under Placements, select both Assignment Document Processor and Course Assignments Menu, then select Next.

Under Eula Settings, enable EULA Request. In the EULA Target Link URI field, enter https://lti.int.turnitin.com/launch/eula, then select Next.

On the next page, configure the placements:

  • Course Assignments Menu: Make sure it is set to LTI DeepLinkingRequest.
  • Assignment Document Processor: In the Override URI field, enter https://lti.int.turnitin.com/launch/asset.

Select Next to continue.

Adding nicknames is optional. Select Next to continue without adding any.

In the Tool Icon URL field, enter https://statics.int.turnitin.com/turnitin-placement-icon.png, then select Next.

Review your settings, then select Install App.

If you want to enable the app at the root level, make sure it is available and unlocked. Copy the Client ID.

Return to the Turnitin tab and scroll down to the LMS details section.

Enter the following information:

  • Client ID: Paste the Client ID you copied from Canvas.
  • Issuer: https://canvas.beta.instructure.com
  • Platform public key set URL: https://sso.beta.canvaslms.com/api/lti/security/jwks
  • Access token URL: https://sso.beta.canvaslms.com/login/oauth2/token
  • OpenID connect login endpoint: https://sso.beta.canvaslms.com/api/lti/authorize_redirect

Select Save and Close.

If you want to limit access to the Turnitin app to specific subaccounts or courses, you can change its availability at the root account level.

To do this, return to the Canvas beta tab and select the pencil icon for the Turnitin app.

Choose Not Available, then select Save.

Select Add Exception.

Choose the subaccounts or courses that need access to the app.

Deployment

Open a Canvas course where Turnitin Advantage (LTI 1.3) is enabled, then select Assignments. From the Course Assignment Menu, choose Turnitin. The name may differ depending on what you named the app during setup.

Log in using the same process at home.turnitin.com.

Select +Create new.

Find the Turnitin account you created for your Canvas beta environment. Select the radio button next to the account, then select Next.

Enter a name for the deployment, then select Next.

Confirm the deployment.

Once the success message appears, select X to exit.

To enable the Document Processor workflow (optional), go to Settings and choose the Feature Options tab. Find Document Processor and make sure it is enabled.

Reinstalling after a Canvas beta reset

The Canvas beta environment resets every week. If you do not complete your testing before the next reset, you must reinstall the Turnitin app and repeat the deployment process in Canvas. You must also recreate any courses and assignments used for testing.

However, you can link the integration to the same Turnitin subaccount. When reinstalling the app, make sure the generated Client ID matches the one previously linked to your Turnitin account.

Find the Turnitin account you previously used for testing, then select Link.

Confirm the account selection.

Once the success message appears, the account is linked.
