Overview of the Writing Report
Submission Toolbar

Student Name and Submission title: displays the student's name and the title of their submission.
- If you select Hide student details for anonymous grading, the student's name will not appear. For more information about anonymous grading, view the grading and feedback section of: Creating a Student Writing assignment.
- Help: opens a drop-down menu with an external link to help guidance.
- Go to Reports and Feedback: navigates to Integrity Reports (as available by your institution’s license type) and grading and feedback tools.
Document Viewer

Document view: displays the document as it appeared at a precise point in the writing process.
- The default view is the final submission, but selecting findings or interacting with the timeline updates the view.
- Collapse and expand button: opens or closes the Writing Report side panel.
Writing Report side panel and Flags tab
- Writing Report side panel: contains the Flags, Observations, and AI Chat Activity tabs.
- Flags tab: displays a list of flags, as applicable, to a student’s submission.
- Flag name: surfaces potential integrity concerns based on writing behaviors.

Findings: provides expandable cards with writing process data linked to each flag.
- Expanded finding: shows the specific metrics that inform the associated flag.
Observations Tab
- Observations tab: provides foundational data about how the document was created.
- Writing Process information section: displays an overview of key writing metrics.
- Pasted text findings section: shows details about individual paste events during the writing process.
- Pasted text card: contains specific data related to a single paste event.
- Pasted text finding number: aligns each paste event with its place on the timeline and updates the document view to match that moment.
- Go-to-source arrow: opens additional information about the source used in the paste.

- Go-back arrow: closes the slide-out and returns you to the pasted text findings list.
- Previous/Next arrows: navigate between the pasted text findings.
- Pasted text finding number: indicates the order of the finding within the document.
- Source type: describes the origin of the source (e.g., publication, internet).
- Source authors: lists the authors of the source.
- Matching text blocks: number of text blocks in the source that correspond to the pasted text.
- Matched words in paste: total number of words within the paste that match the source.
- Left/Right arrows: navigate across the entire match if it spans multiple places in the source.
- Matched words in current block: number of words that match the currently displayed text block of the source.
- External link to source: opens the source in a new window or tab.
- Matched source content: displays the source text with words that match the paste shown in bold.
AI Chat Activity Tab Overview

AI Chat Activity tab: provides a holistic summary of the student's whole conversation with the assistant, and how it relates to their writing process.
- This tab is only visible if the AI chat is enabled.
- Here’s how the student used AI section: provides a summary of the student’s AI chat activity.
- Full Chat History button: opens a comprehensive transcript of every request from the student and the AI Assistant’s response, sorted from most recent to oldest.
- Chat Themes section: organizes and summarizes the student’s chat into a stage of the writing process.
- Chat Theme card: provides the theme, number of requests related to the theme, and a bulleted summary of the requests. Expand or collapse to view theme details.
- Go-to-chat-history arrow: opens the specific chat exchange tied to the selected theme.

Writing process playback

Player controls
- Play/Pause button: starts or stops the writing process playback
- Previous and Next finding controls: jumps to the next or previous pasted text event on the timeline
- Adjust Playback Speed button: changes the speed of the playback
- Session number: identifies the writing session number. For more information about sessions, visit our guidance on Reviewing the Writing Report.
- Current point in playback: pinpoints the moment currently shown in the writing process.

Pasted text finding number: corresponds to the matching pasted text card in the Observations tab. Playback automatically pauses when it reaches a finding on the timeline, and the selected finding is marked by an extra circular highlight.
- Total writing time: matches the writing time shown in the Writing Process Information section, reflecting only the time the student actively engaged with the document through clicking or typing, not passive actions like scrolling or idle time.
