Getting Started with Turnitin Clarity for Students

This guide helps students get started with Turnitin Clarity’s Student Writing assignment and introduces key features that support your writing process from drafting to submission.

If you have questions about your writing or submission, contact your instructor directly.

In this guide:

What is Turnitin Clarity?

Turnitin Clarity’s Student Writing assignment allows you to draft and submit your work directly within Clarity’s writing space. Your writing process—from ideation to final submission—is visible to your instructor and serves as your “proof of process.”

This transparency provides evidence of your authentic work, supports academic integrity, and promotes fairness across your learning community.

The writing space

The submission toolbar at the top of the writing space helps you manage your assignment. You can edit your title, submit or download your work, and access help content (including keyboard shortcuts and guidance links).

The submission toolbar

  • Rename your assignment until you submit or the due date passes.
  • Download a PDF that matches what you see in the editor, then print it from your browser.
  • Access help content, including keyboard shortcuts and guidance links.
  • Select Preview to see how your work will look before submission. The preview displays your work in pages, while the writing space does not.
  • Select Submit when you’re ready to submit your work.

If your instructor has enabled resubmissions, you can submit up to three times within 24 hours. Each new submission replaces the previous version, including grades and feedback.

The editor

The editor is the drafting space for your assignment.

  • Compose and edit directly in your browser.
  • Insert images by uploading, copying, or dragging and dropping.
    • The editor cannot create charts or complex graphics. Create these elsewhere and insert them as images.
  • Create and format tables.
  • Review and apply spelling and grammar suggestions.
    • You can hide spelling suggestions at any time.
    • Run an AI-assisted grammar check to improve punctuation, grammar, and mechanics.

The editor works only when connected to the internet and does not support offline editing.

The side panel

The side panel gives you access to helpful writing tools while drafting your assignment.

  • View assignment instructions side-by-side with the editor for easy reference.
  • Access Turnitin’s AI Chat (when enabled by your instructor) for real-time writing support that references assignment instructions and requirements.

For more information, view Writing in Turnitin Clarity .

Turnitin’s AI Chat

Turnitin’s AI Chat is available from the AI Chat tab in the side panel. This feature is available only when your instructor enables it. You can ask the assistant for help with getting started, researching, proofreading, or refining your writing.

Ask for help

Use the chat to ask for support with getting started, research, proofreading, or assignment-specific feedback. You can select up to 1,000 characters from your draft for focused feedback.

Use Turnitin’s suggested prompts

Select from a list of suggested prompts for AI help during the writing process. Prompts can be edited before sending to fit your needs.

Students can send up to 250 messages to the chat. When 10 messages remain, a countdown notification will appear.

The Writing Report

The Writing Report is generated after submission. It gives instructors insight into how students develop ideas, integrate sources, and progress toward the final submission. Students can access the Writing Report after the due date if the instructor enables it.

Observations

The Observations tab displays writing metrics such as final word count, active writing time, and writing sessions. It also logs external paste events, noting whether each pasted passage was changed or left unchanged.

AI Chat activity

If you used AI Chat for the assignment, the AI Chat activity tab summarizes your chat interactions and shows how they relate to your writing process.

Writing process playback

The writing process playback at the bottom of the report shows a timeline of your active writing from the first keystroke to final submission. You can play, pause, skip, rewind, or adjust playback speed (0.25–10×).
