Footnotes in Turnitin Clarity
To better support formatting and referencing, you can now add footnotes using the formatting toolbar in Turnitin Clarity’s writing space.
Important notes about footnotes:
- The editor remains pageless while you are writing.
- Footnotes appear at the bottom of the document as you work.
When your paper is submitted, viewed by your instructor, or downloaded as a PDF, footnotes appear correctly on the pages that correspond to their references.
Submitting Turnitin Clarity assignments
We updated how writing assignments can be submitted and reviewed for Turnitin Clarity assignments, depending on how your instructor sets up the assignment.
Single or multiple submissions
Your instructor may choose whether an assignment allows:
- A single submission or
- Multiple submissions up until the due date
- If multiple submissions are enabled, you may submit your work up to three times within a 24-hour period.
Earlier access to submissions
For some assignments, your instructor may review your paper and Writing Report as soon as you submit, even before the due date.
Your instructor may also provide feedback immediately after submission.
- If multiple submissions are allowed, any feedback will be removed if you submit a new version of your paper.
- For this reason, feedback may be provided after the due date instead.

Citation assistant in Turnitin Clarity
If enabled by your instructor, Turnitin Clarity includes an AI-powered citation assistant to help you develop confidence and accuracy in referencing. It currently supports:
- APA
- MLA
Support for Chicago and Harvard styles will be added at a later date.
You can access citation feedback by selecting Citation check. The tool provides feedback on:
- Citation and reference formatting for the selected style
- Mismatches between in-text citations and references
- Missing citations
Citation feedback appears directly within the writing space, using the same presentation as spelling and grammar checks.
You can also ask the AI assistant questions such as:
- How do I cite this source?
- Do my in-text citations match my references?
- Have my citations been formatted correctly?
Citation assistance and other AI writing tools are available only in English and only when enabled by your instructor.
Download your composition as a PDF
You can download a PDF copy of your composition at any point while writing or after submission.
To download your work:
- Select Menu in the top-right corner of the writing space.
- Choose Download.
This feature is available for all Student Writing assignments, including those that have already been submitted.
