Viewing the Writing Report

If your instructor has made it available, you can view the Writing Report. This report shows your writing process from beginning to final submission and includes Observations, AI Chat Activity, and a playback of your writing activity.

The submission toolbar

The submission toolbar across the top of the Writing Report is where you can view the assignment title, access help, or return to your Similarity Report and feedback.

The submission

Your submission will be displayed in the main part of the report on the left-hand side of the screen.

There is a toolbar at the bottom of the submission that indicates the current page being viewed and the word count. You can also increase or decrease the size of the submission by zooming in or out.

The Writing Report side panel

In the side panel, you’ll see the Writing Report. The Writing Report contains the Observations tab and AI Chat Activity tab.

Observations

In the Observations tab, data and activity from your writing process are captured, including pasted text activity.

Writing process information

  • Final word count: number of words added by typing and/or pasting to the writing space, not including the words deleted/removed.
  • Total writing time: time spent actively engaging with the submission in the writing space by adding and removing characters. This does not include time spent clicking or scrolling.
  • Writing sessions: number of times you started and stopped activity in the document by entering and leaving the writing space or by becoming inactive for an extended period.

Pasted text findings

  • View key details for each paste event.
  • Select a pasted text card to automatically change the state of the document to correspond to the finding and jump to that moment on the timeline.
    • Unchanged: text remained the same from the initial paste to the document’s submission.
    • Changed: text was edited after it was first pasted into the writing space.

Pasted text findings appear in chronological order based on when they were added to the document.

AI Chat Activity

This tab displays how you interacted with the AI Assistant during the writing process.

This tab is only visible if the assistant is enabled.

Chat history is organized into a bulleted summary of your AI usage, chat themes, and a link to view the full chat history. For additional information, view Using Turnitin Clarity’s AI Chat.

The Chat Themes section organizes prompts by the messages sent and how often each one was used.

Writing process playback

The writing process playback, along the bottom of the report, shows a timeline of your active writing from first keystroke to final submission; you can play, pause, skip, rewind, or set the playback speed (0.25–10×).

  1. During playback, the document updates in real time to show your writing activity.
  2. Different markings indicate additions, deletions, and pastes.
  1. A green highlight indicates the text you added.
  2. A green strikethrough indicates the words you deleted.
  3. A purple underline indicates the text you pasted into the document.
    1. It will also include a finding number on the timeline and a pasted text finding card in the Observations tab in the side panel.

Timeline

Use the timeline to explore how your writing developed over time.

  • Play/Pause button: starts or stops the playback.
  • Playback speed button: adjusts the speed of the playback and gives you the flexibility to navigate the writing process at your own pace.

  • Pasted text finding number: pinpoints notable moments during the writing process.
    • Select timeline finding bubbles to jump directly to that moment and view the document in that state.
    • During playback, the timeline automatically pauses at each finding so you can see how it fits into your writing process.
  • Session number: identifies each writing session (e.g., Session 1, Session 2, etc.).

If you wrote the entire submission within one session, the timeline will only show Session 1 on the timeline.
