This guide shows instructors how to create a Canvas assignment that uses Turnitin through the Canvas Document Processor , configure report settings, and view Similarity and AI writing reports.
In this guide:
Create the assignment in Canvas
- In your Canvas course, go to Assignments , then select + Assignment.
- Complete the basic assignment details:

- Assignment group, if applicable
- Grade display settings
- Whether the grade counts toward the final grade
-
Under Submission Type, select Online.
The Document Processor supports the following submission options:
- Text Entry
- File Upload
- Set any additional assignment options you need:
- Allowed submission attempts
- Group assignment settings
- Peer review
- Moderated grading
- Anonymous grading
- Due, available from, and until dates
- Scroll to the bottom of the assignment settings and select Add Document Processing App.
Add Turnitin via the Document Processor
-
In the Add Document Processing App modal, select Turnitin.
Turnitin is currently the only supported document processing tool.
- Configure Turnitin settings as needed:
- Choose whether to store submissions
- Select which sources submissions are compared against
- Enable any exclusions, such as:
- Bibliographic materials
- Quoted material
- Small matches
-
Select Allow students to view report after submitting if you want students to see their results.
This setting is locked after assignment creation. Once the assignment is saved, you cannot change whether students can view the report.
- Select Save to apply the Turnitin settings.
- When you are finished configuring the assignment select Save & Publish to make the assignment available to students. Alternatively, select Save to keep it unpublished and publish later.
View reports after submission
After a student submits the assignment, you can view reports in Canvas.
- Open the assignment
- Select SpeedGrader
- Open a student submission
- In the right panel, locate Document processor reports and select View Report for Turnitin Similarity and AI writing (if enabled for your institution).
Report generation may take some time, so reports may not appear immediately after submission.
Student access to reports
If you enabled student access during assignment creation students can view their report from the Grades area, or the Assignments area.
If student access was not enabled at creation, students will not be able to view the report.
