FAQs for Instructors Using Turnitin Clarity

This guide answers common instructor questions about using Turnitin Clarity’s Student Writing assignment, including system requirements, supported languages, and general platform guidance.

In this guide:

General

Should I require my students to complete the entire assignment in the student writing tool?

It is important to remind students that all writing, revision, and editing must be completed within the student writing space. If a student completes work outside the writing tool, the tool will not track the writing process, and there is no way to submit the writing to generate the Writing Report. The report is generated from a student directly engaging in the process inside the platform.

For what types of assignments is the student writing tool best suited?

It is well-suited for all types of writing assignments, including essays, reflections, and research papers.

Will the student writing tool allow students to share their work with peers for a peer review process?

No, the student writing tool will not include a peer-to-peer collaboration functionality. This is something we may look into at a later date, but is not guaranteed to be a future feature of the student writing tool.

How will the student writing tool benefit my students?

Students can use the writing tool to showcase the originality of their assignment. Features like the timeline playback and pasted text content help instructors see how the content has evolved during the writing process.

How often is my student’s progress saved?

Your student’s progress will be automatically saved as they write and make changes to the document.

Any time they make a change to the document, it starts a short timer to save their work. If they keep typing or editing, the timer will reset. But if they type continuously, their work will still be saved every 5 seconds. If they stop making changes, the save happens shortly after their last action.

They’ll see a “Saving…” or “Saved” indicator along with the Last Saved date and time stamp at the top-left of the editor.

Where can I find the End User License Agreement (EULA) and the Privacy Policy regarding the student writing tool?

Turnitin's Services Privacy Policy is available here and within the product as part of the workflow. In order to use the new assignment, students and instructors will be required to agree to an EULA specific to this new tool.

Will Turnitin Clarity’s AI assistant work even if the customer does not license Turnitin Originality?

Yes, the AI assistant within Turnitin Clarity is an independent feature. It will be available to customers who license the Turnitin Clarity add-on.

System requirements

Is there an "offline" option to use Turnitin Clarity?

No, there is no offline editing available. If the student goes offline while editing, the editor will freeze and prevent further edits, ensuring no work is lost. Internet access is also required to use the AI assistant, a key element of Turnitin Clarity.

Can a student work in multiple browsers at the same time?

We recommend working in one active tab or window in your browser.

  • However, if a student opens the student writing tool in multiple tabs, it may take a few moments for the writing space to sync.
  • If they have multiple tabs or windows open on the same device, they should not experience any data loss.

If students have the writing space open on multiple devices simultaneously, they may experience some syncing issues with their document, which could result in data loss. This is not recommended.

Can my students use the student writing tool on their mobile device?

The writing space is only supported on tablets, laptops, or desktops. Attempting to access the Student Writing assignment on mobile is not recommended.

What are the technical requirements to utilize the student writing tool?

LTI 1.3 and Turnitin online are supported, but LTI 1.3 integrations with the LMS are recommended for an optimal experience.

What browsers does Turnitin Clarity support?

We support the latest and one previous version of the following browsers:

  • Chrome
  • Firefox
  • Safari
  • Microsoft Edge
