How student self-enrollment works
During class creation, you can choose whether students can enroll themselves.
Students self-enrolling into a Turnitin class must have the case-sensitive class enrollment key. This provides a student user with authorization to access the class on Turnitin. Please don't post the key on a publicly accessible website; this helps ensure only your students enroll in your class.
After creating a class, the enrollment key will appear in a modal.
If you need to access the enrollment key after class creation, you can view it by visiting the class homepage and selecting the View Enrollment Key button. Enrollment keys are valid for 14 days, and they can be regenerated by selecting the Generate new key button.

How long is an enrollment key valid?
An enrollment key is valid for 14 days (336 hours). You can view the current enrollment key and its expiration date from the class homepage.
How many enrollment keys can I generate?
You can generate as many enrollment keys as needed. However, only one enrollment key can be active for a class at a time.
If you generate a new enrollment key, the previous key will expire and can no longer be used to enroll in the class.
What happens to students who enrolled using a previous enrollment key?
Students who successfully enrolled using a valid enrollment key will remain enrolled in the class, even if you generate a new key.
What happens if I disable self-enrollment?
When you disable self-enrollment, the current enrollment key will expire and students will no longer be able to use a key to enroll in the class.
You can enable self-enrollment again at any time:
- Navigate to Edit Class.
- Enable the Self-enrollment option.
Students who enrolled before self-enrollment was disabled will remain enrolled in the class.
How do I enable self-enrollment for an existing class?
To allow students to self-enroll in an existing class:
- Navigate to Edit Class.
- Enable the Self-enrollment option.
- Return to the class homepage to view or copy the enrollment key.
You can also generate a new enrollment key from the class homepage.
Students who are already enrolled in the class will remain enrolled.
What happens if a student enters an expired or incorrect enrollment key?
If a student enters an expired or incorrect enrollment key, they will be asked to contact their instructor for a valid key.
Students must enter the current enrollment key to successfully enroll in the class.
