Turnitin’s AI writing detection provides a percentage and a report with highlighted text.
The percentage detected as AI is the total amount of qualifying text in the submission likely originated from a Large Language Model (LLM). Likely AI-generated text, including text likely modified by a bypasser or paraphraser, is highlighted in blue in the submission.
It is not meant to provide definitive answers in isolation. More important than any tool is the educator who sees the score and makes decisions balancing this information with their personal knowledge of their students, their work, and institutional policy.
When educators look at the AI writing score and utilize it as a single data point rather than a definitive response, then it is being used as intended. No tool can replace the educator’s judgment combined with other data points to determine whether such a conversation is needed.
