New Turnitin Feedback Studio FAQ

In this guide:

What is the new Feedback Studio?

Turnitin Feedback Studio has been reimagined to meet modern education needs. With a focus on innovation and accessible design, it establishes a new foundation for delivering customer-driven enhancements and product add-ons that will empower institutions to stay ahead of the curve and adapt to the dynamic demands of 21st-century teaching and learning.

The new Feedback Studio will be released as a new assignment type, giving institutions the flexibility to adopt the enhanced experience without disrupting existing workflows. This approach allows for a smoother transition, with the ability to align rollout with each institution’s specific needs, preferences, and academic calendars.

What improvements are in the new Feedback Studio assignment experience?

In the new assignment for Feedback Studio we address many long standing customer requests. Here are the highlights:

Assignment creation and management

  • Individual Extensions - we added the ability to provide extensions for students that require accommodations
  • The template exclusion capability now is also attachment for students to use to complete the assignment
  • A new column to track the AI score prediction in the submissions list helps teachers see at a glance potential use of generative AI writing tools (only available for customers with the Originality license)
  • Ability to update similarity report assignment settings and regenerate all similarity reports at once
  • With deep linking support, LMS Course/assignment copy can include settings, rubric and template exclusions
  • Accessibility improvements
  • An indicator for students that feedback is available for review in their assignment submission

Similarity Report

  • A new report mode, Match Groups, that provides functionality which categorizes matches into groups based on the usage of in-text citations and quotation marks. Helps student identify areas in their work that require source attribution, quotations, or improved paraphrasing
  • Source cards allow teachers to review within the side panel the student’s text that matches from the matching source text
  • Integrated AI writing report allows teachers to review both the Similarity report and the AI writing report in the same report experience
  • Accessibility improvements

Grading and Feedback

  • Decimal grades support
  • Ranged rubrics allow teachers to select a value between a performance level range when evaluating student work
  • Margin comments increases comment visibility and student engagement with feedback
  • Pinned feedback allows teachers to elevate feedback that is most important for a student to address. Pinned feedback is displayed in a list below the summary comment for quick reference by students
  • Color customization for comments and QuickMarks. QuickMarks can now be set to specific colors in an accessible color palette
  • Improved experience viewing comments linked to rubric criteria
  • A reorganization of the Rubric and QuickMark managers to declutter the experience with different sections for instructor created, institutionally shared, or Turnitin provided Rubric or QuickMark sets
  • Download and upload rubrics in an excel format to improve sharing across teaching peers
  • Archive rubrics that are no longer in use to declutter the library of rubrics
  • Download and update QuickMark sets in an excel format to improve sharing reusable comments across teaching peers and to ensure feedback consistency across a marking team

Which customers will have access to the new Feedback Studio experience?

All Feedback Studio customers that either have an LTI 1.3 integration set up on their LMS or use the direct Turnitin login experience (Native experience) will be able to use the new experience.

What controls do administrators have for the transition to the new experience?

On May 8th, Turnitin admins will have new account settings to help manage and control the transition to the new Feedback Studio assignment experience. We plan to automatically upgrade customers to the new experience on July 15th 2025 and an additional account setting will allow an admin to choose to opt-out of that automatic upgrade.

There are three Feedback Studio assignment options available:

  • Enable only the classic assignment experience (the default on May 8th)
  • Enable only the new assignment experience (the default on July 15th unless a customer chooses to opt-out of the automatic upgrade)
  • Enable instructor choice to use either the classic or the new assignment experiences

For more information on upgrading to the new Feedback Studio experience, please visit our guide on Upgrading to the new Standard Assignment.

What about customers that are not using an LTI 1.3 integration?

For customers that are on an LMS that supports LTI 1.3, now is a great opportunity to review the benefits of making that transition to LTI 1.3. There are LMS migration resources available to support enabling LTI 1.3 across Canvas, Moodle, and D2L. Blackboard has already fully transitioned customers to LTI 1.3.

Enabling the new experience on an account using a non LTI 1.3 assignment will have no impact on that LMS integration experience.

What classic features are not supported in the new Feedback Studio experience?

Here is the list of classic features that are not supported in the new experience:

  • PeerMark - instead of getting the legacy PeerMark to work with the new experience we plan to redesign the peer review experience to better meet the needs of our customers
  • Grading templates
  • Direct Log in/Native access features
    • Class preferences tab
    • Class QuickMark breakdown
    • Class calendar tab
    • Class summary column on t_home.asp
    • Class learning analytics column on t_home.asp
    • Instructor Libraries tab
    • Gradebook tab
    • Discussion Boards tab

Customers that rely on these capabilities have the choice to remain on the classic experience.

When will we no longer support the classic assignment experience?

We currently do not have a set date for when the classic assignment will no longer be supported.

What is missing from the current experience?
