Managing a Student Writing assignment

This guide provides instructors with information on accessing and managing assignment-level details by highlighting key submission data and available actions.

Elements of the assignment

This section outlines the key markers and indicators shown for each student’s submission in the assignment list.

  • Student / Title: displays the student’s first and last name, followed by the submission title.
  • Submitted: shows the submission date, with late submissions displayed in red and a clock icon.
  • Grade: shows the given grade, or a pencil icon for ungraded submissions.
  • Similarity: shows the similarity score, or dashes if no Similarity Report exists.
  • AI writing (Originality licenses only): shows the AI writing detection score, or dashes if no AI report exists.
  • Flags: shows a flag icon next to the number of identified flags, specific to Writing Report flags for Student Writing assignments.
  • Viewed: shows a checkmark if a student has opened their submission and viewed their grade and feedback.
  • More menu:
    • Open report: opens Feedback Studio’s Feedback tab to the Similarity Report.
    • Copy submission ID: copies the submission’s unique identifier.
    • Copy composition ID: copies the composition’s unique identifier (in-progress document).
    • Grant extension: allows you to extend the due date for individual students

Assignment details 

This section explains the information and controls available in the expandable assignment details box.

  • Assignment details toggle: expands or hides the assignment details section using the button on the top right.
  • Copy ID: copies the unique assignment identifier to the clipboard.
  • Edit settings button: allows review or adjustment of certain assignment settings. (Some settings, including the start date and due date, can only be changed in the LMS.)

  • Assignment schedule: shows the review schedule for the assignment.
  • Assignment settings summary: shows a summary of the current assignment settings.
  • Attached rubric: displays the rubric associated with the assignment, if applicable.
  • Help button: opens the Student Writing assignment help guides section in a new window.

Grant an extension

Instructors can grant a due date extension for a single student directly from the submission list.

  1. Open the More menu for the student’s submission.
  2. Select Grant extension.
  3. In the Grant extension modal, choose Days or Hours from the drop-down menu.
  4. Enter the number of days or hours to extend. As you adjust the amount, the Extend due date until field updates automatically.

Note: The original due date always appears at the bottom of the Grant extension modal.

  1. Select Confirm. A success message appears at the top of the submission list, and the Submitted column displays subtext that reflects the extension (for example, 3-day extension).

Edit an extension

Instructors can edit or remove an existing extension at any time. If a student already has an extension, the length of the extension appears in the Submitted column.

  1. Open the More menu and select Edit extension.
  2. In the Edit extension modal, review the Original due date and Current extended due date displayed at the bottom.
  3. To change the extension, select Days or Hours from the drop-down, then enter a new value. You can increase or decrease the extension length. The Extend due date until field updates automatically.
  4. Select Confirm when finished. A blue toast message appears and says, “Applying extension to [student name].”

Remove an extension

Instructors can remove an existing extension to restore the original due date.

  1. Open the More menu and select Edit extension.
  2. In the Edit extension modal, select Remove extension in the lower-left corner. This action restores the student’s original due date.
  3. After selecting Remove extension, a blue toast message appears and says, “Removing extension for [student name].”
  4. When the process is complete, a green success message appears and says, “Successfully removed extension for [student name].”
