In this guide, instructors will learn how to navigate the assignment inbox in Turnitin, review submission details, access similarity and AI writing scores, and view insights.

The new Standard Assignment is only currently available for Turnitin Feedback Studio licenses using the Turnitin website or an LTI 1.3 integration.

At the top right of the submission list, you'll find several action buttons:

  • Search - Search for a specific student or submission.

For large classes, the search feature may become temporarily disabled. To re-enable search, visit each page of the submission list to load all students.

  • Refresh reports - Check for any updates to the submission list without reloading the webpage. This includes updated submission data or refreshed reports.
  • Download - Download selected reports and submission files.
  • Resync grades - Re-send assignment grades to the gradebook.

The submission list includes the following information for each student:

  • Student / Title - The student's first and last name, followed by the title of their submission.
  • Submitted - The date and time the submission was received. Late submissions appear in red.
  • Grade - Displays the assigned grade. A pencil icon indicates the submission is ungraded.
  • Similarity - The similarity score. If a Similarity Report is not available, dashes will appear.
  • AI Writing (Originality add-on only) - The AI writing indicator score. If no AI Writing report exists, dashes will appear.

Download options

You can download student submissions and reports in bulk using the Download button at the top of the submission list.

Select the Download button to open the download options menu.

From here, select one of the following options:

  • Submission list – Download a CSV file of all student submissions. This includes details like submission date, similarity scores, and AI writing percentages.

The CSV file will always include an "Email" column. Email addresses will only appear if they are available and the student's identity is not hidden by anonymous grading.

  • All reports and files – Download all available files and reports for each student. This includes original submissions, similarity reports, grading and feedback, and AI writing reports. Files are organized in folders by report type and student name (or placeholder name if anonymous grading is on).
  • Similarity Reports – Export PDF versions of Similarity Reports for all submitted files.
  • AI writing reports – Export PDF versions of AI writing detection results.
  • Grading and feedback reports – Download PDFs that include any grades and feedback left by the instructor.
  • Originally submitted files – Download the original file(s) uploaded by each student in their original format (e.g., .docx, .pdf).

If there are more than 500 files included in your download, the system will automatically split them into multiple ZIP files, each containing up to 500 files.

Keep the window open while your download is processing. Closing the tab or window will cancel the download.

Assignment details

The assignment details can be hidden and expanded using the button on the top right of the assignment details box.

Within the assignment details, you can:

  • Review the assignment scheduling
  • Review a summary of the assignment settings
  • View the attached rubric
  • Download a copy of the assignment template if one has already been uploaded

AI writing (Originality add-on only)

For institutions that have access to and have enabled Turnitin’s AI writing detection, you’ll see an AI Writing column in the assignment’s inbox. This column displays the AI writing scores for each submission.

To view the AI scores in the submission list, a disclaimer must first be reviewed and accepted. You only need to accept the disclaimer once. If the disclaimer is not accepted, the AI scores will be blurred within the inbox.

If you selected Decline by mistake, you can double-click the AI Writing column heading to change the disclaimer response to Accept.

Insights

The insights tab within your assignment provides an overview of how each submission performed based on its overall grade and its rubric criteria.

The insights column contains a column for each submission’s grade and a column for each criterion within your chosen rubric.
