This guide helps instructors create a Multipart assignment when they want students to complete a larger assignment in connected stages. Each part has its own title, instructions, dates, settings, and submissions, so you can guide students through the work step by step.
In this guide:
- Create a Multipart assignment
- Add assignment parts
- Continue from a previous Clarity part
- Duplicate an assignment part
- Delete an assignment part
- Reorder assignment parts
- Finish creating the assignment
Create a Multipart assignment
To begin, create the overall assignment that will contain the assignment parts.
- From your assignment area, select + Assignment.
- Select Multipart.
- Enter the Overall assignment title.
Add assignment parts
Each assignment part is created separately within the Multipart assignment. After you give the Multipart assignment a title, you can begin adding parts.
- Select + Add Part.
- If you have access to more than one assignment type, choose the assignment type you want to add.
- Complete the required details for the assignment part.
- Select + Add Part, then repeat these steps for each part you want to include.
A Multipart assignment can include up to 8 parts.
A Multipart assignment can include different assignment types, such as Standard and Clarity. The assignment types available depend on your institution’s licenses.
Learn more about setting up each assignment type:
Continue from a previous Clarity part
When two Clarity parts appear one after the other, you can allow students to continue working from their submission to the preceding part. The earlier submission automatically appears in the next part’s writing space, so students can build on their existing work.
For example, students could develop an outline into a rough draft, or revise a rough draft into a final draft. When this option is used, the Writing Report also shows the starting word count for the subsequent part.
Duplicate an assignment part
You can duplicate a part when you want to reuse the same structure, instructions, and settings for another stage of the assignment.
- Find the assignment part you want to copy.
- Select the duplicate part icon.
- Update the duplicated part’s title.
- Add the required dates.
- Review the copied settings and make any changes.
Duplicating a part copies its assignment details and settings, but does not copy its dates. Add new dates to the duplicated part before creating the assignment.
Duplicated parts are added as the final part of the assignment, rather than directly after the part you duplicated.
Delete an assignment part
You can delete a part when you want to remove it from the assignment.
- Find the assignment part you want to delete.
- Select the delete part icon.
Deleting a part permanently removes the assignment details and settings you entered. Save a copy of any instructions you may want to reuse before deleting the part.
Reorder assignment parts
You can reorder assignment parts before you create the Multipart assignment. Reordering the parts changes the order in which they appear to students in the Multipart Overview and to instructors in the parts navigation.
Reordering parts does not require students to complete them in that order. Use availability dates to control when each part is open.
- Find the assignment part you want to reorder.
- Select the up or down arrow next to the assignment name to move the part to a different position.
You cannot reorder assignment parts after the assignment has been created.
Finish creating the assignment
Review each part before creating the Multipart assignment.
After you create the assignment, you cannot add, remove, or reorder its parts. Make sure each part is complete and appears in the correct order before continuing.
- Check that each part has the correct title, instructions, dates, and settings.
- Confirm that no parts show the Requires setup badge.
- Select Create Assignment.
- Select Confirm to confirm assignment creation. Once you have created the Multipart assignment you cannot add, reorder, or delete parts.
- Open each part in your LMS. Students only see a part in the Multipart Overview after you open it in the LMS.
The Multipart assignment is created with each part connected in one assignment workflow.
