[New] Using in-margin comments

This feature is relevant to our new grading and feedback experience. If you are using our classic grading and feedback workflow, you can view our classic experience guidance for more information, or learn more about switching to the new experience from our resource center.

Comments provide a way for instructors to leave individualized comments on a submission. If the comment is made frequently, it can be converted to a QuickMark.

Comments can be prioritized by pinning them and they can be linked to rubric criteria if a rubric or grading form is attached to the assignment.

In this guide:

Adding comments

There are a few different ways to add comments to a submission.

  1. Select anywhere on the submission.
  2. Select the comment icon from the on-screen menu, and provide the text for the comment.
  3. Select the Create button.
  4. Highlight the section of text you would like to associate with the comment. Then, provide the text for the comment.
  5. Once saved, you’ll see the applied comment in the margin of the document.
  6. The highlight color of your selected text can be changed by selecting the Edit option from the Options menu. Then, select the highlighter icon to change the color.
  7. Select the Save button.

Pinning comments

Use the pinned feedback feature to prioritize important comments for your student. Pinned comments are indicated by a yellow pushpin icon at the top left of the comment card.

  1. Select the comment card you want to pin.
  2. Select the Options menu in the top-right corner, and select the Pin option from the menu.
  3. Once selected, a pin will appear next to the comment icon at the top of the comment card.
  4. All pinned feedback appears in the margin and is listed under the Summary tab.
  5. To remove the pin, select the Options menu in the top-right corner, and select the Remove pin option from the menu.
    1. Removing the pin from the card also removes the comment from the Pinned Feedback section of the Summary tab.

Linking comments to rubric criterion

Comments can also be linked to specific rubric criteria if a rubric is attached to the assignment. You can find more information in our Linking rubric criteria to QuickMarks or comments guide.

Converting comments to QuickMarks

To reuse comments or create frequently-used comments, you can convert a comment to a QuickMark. Once created, you can use the QuickMark across assignments by accessing the QuickMark set.

  1. Select the comment to open the comment card and select the Convert to QuickMark checkbox below the editor.
    1. Alternatively, select the QuickMark Options menu in the top-right corner, and select the Convert to QuickMark option from the menu.

  2. To convert the comment, add a QuickMark title and assign it to a QuickMark set using the drop-down menu.
  3. Select the Save button to convert your comment to a QuickMark.
    1. The newly-created QuickMark will be in the same location as the comment and any connected highlights will remain.
    2. If your QuickMark has a criterion linked or if the comment is pinned, the criterion icon and/or pinned icons will remain on the card.
    3. A green success message will appear in the bottom left-hand corner of the screen.

  4. Provide additional comments to the QuickMark using the comment editor. Any comments added will only appear in that specific instance.

Editing the description

Once you’ve converted the comment to a QuickMark, the description can only be edited in the QuickMark manager.

  1. To edit the description of the QuickMark, navigate to the QuickMark Manager and edit it from within the set.

Editing the QuickMark description will also update the description in the existing QuickMarks.

Deleting comments

These steps guide you through how to delete a comment from a submission.

  1. To delete a comment, select the comment card to expand it and open the editor. Select the trash can icon in the bottom-left corner of the card.
    1. Alternatively, select the Options menu in the top-right corner, and select the Delete option from the menu.
  2. A green success message will also appear in the bottom left-hand corner of the screen. If you change your mind, select Undo from the message to restore your comment.
