This guide for instructors explains what you need to know about grading Turnitin assignments in Google Classroom.
In this guide:
Choosing a grading strategy
There are two ways to grade a Turnitin assignment in Google Classroom:
- Enter grades within Turnitin (Recommended) if you want to use Turnitin rubrics or grading forms and to benefit from the full Feedback Studio experience.
- Enter grades directly within Google Classroom if you need to grade using a Classroom rubric.
We recommend grading from Turnitin’s submission list for the full Feedback Studio experience where you can see a comprehensive Integrity view of all submissions and access Turnitin’s rich rubrics and feedback summary functionality.
It is important to choose one grading strategy and use it consistently. Avoid grading some submissions in Turnitin and others in Classroom for the same assignment, as this can make it harder to track where grades were entered.
Whichever strategy you choose, students can access their feedback via the Turnitin report and receive a grade in Google Classroom.
How grades sync between Turnitin and Google Classroom
- Grades entered in Turnitin are automatically sent to Google Classroom and appear as draft grades. It may take up to 30 seconds for grades to appear.
- Grades entered directly in Google Classroom are not sent back to Turnitin. Those grades will appear in the Classroom gradebook but will never appear automatically in the Turnitin submission list.
Regardless of where they are entered, newly entered grades remain in a draft state until the teacher returns them in Google Classroom.
Grading an assignment
If Turnitin is your institution’s source of truth for grading and feedback, complete grading and feedback in Turnitin rather than entering grades directly in Google Classroom.
When a grade is entered in Turnitin, it will appear in Google Classroom as the draft grade. Grade sent from Turnitin may take a few seconds to appear in Google Classroom.
Grades are not returned to students automatically. After grading, grades remain in a draft state until you return them in Google Classroom.
There are two main ways to grade a Turnitin assignment.
Grading via Turnitin’s workflow (recommended)
Use this workflow if you want to enter grades in Turnitin or use Turnitin rubrics.
Before grading, make sure any Turnitin rubric you want to use is attached to the Turnitin assignment.
- From the Classwork tab, locate and select the assignment you would like to grade.
- Select the Turnitin assignment to launch Turnitin’s submission list for the assignment.
- Select the grade icon for the student submission you would like to review. This will launch the report.
- Add feedback in the Similarity Report.
- Apply the grade to the assignment in the header of the Similarity Report.
- If you are using a rubric, use the rubric in Turnitin to score the submission.
If you are using a rubric to grade the assignment, view our Grading with rubrics and grading forms guidance for more information.
When you enter a grade in Turnitin, the grade is sent to Google Classroom as a draft grade.
Grading via Google Classroom’s workflow
Use this workflow if you want to enter grades directly in the Google Classroom grading tool or use Google Classroom rubrics.
Before grading, make sure any Google Classroom rubric you want to use is attached to the Google Classroom assignment.
- From the Classwork tab in Google Classroom, locate and select the assignment you would like to grade.
- Select the Review Work button to launch Google Classroom’s grading workflow.
- Select a student submission.
- The Turnitin report opens in the Google Classroom grading view.
- Review the Similarity Report and leave feedback using Turnitin feedback tools as needed.
- Enter the grade in Google Classroom’s grade field on the right.
- If you are using a Google Classroom rubric, use the rubric in Google Classroom to score the submission.
When the Turnitin report is opened from the Classroom grading workflow, the report is shown in an embedded view. In this view, grading and summary feedback is completed in Google Classroom, so the Turnitin grade field, rubric tab and summary feedback tab are not shown.
Grades entered in Google Classroom are saved in Google Classroom. They are not sent back to Turnitin, so the Turnitin submission list will not show those grades.
Grades entered directly in Google Classroom are only available in the LMS and will not pass back to Turnitin. Therefore Turnitin’s submission list, report and student workflow will show an empty value for the grade.
Returning graded submissions to students
After grading an assignment, the grade given is in a draft state. This means that the student cannot see their grade. You can see this indicated by the Not returned text at the top right of this view.
The Feedback release date controls when students can view their feedback and grade in Turnitin. Returning the grade in Google Classroom controls when students can see the grade in the Google Classroom interface.
You can return an individual grade by selecting the Return button at the top right. Alternatively, if you select the dropdown arrow to the right of the button, you can return the grade for multiple submissions at once.
