Working with grades in Google Classroom

This guide for instructors explains what you need to know about grading Turnitin assignments in Google Classroom.

In this guide:

Grading an assignment

If Turnitin is your institution’s source of truth for grading and feedback, complete grading and feedback in Turnitin rather than entering grades directly in Google Classroom.

When a grade is entered in Turnitin, it will appear in Google Classroom as the draft grade. Grade sent from Turnitin may take a few seconds to appear in Google Classroom.

Grades are not returned to students automatically. After grading, grades remain in a draft state until you return them in Google Classroom.

There are two main ways to grade a Turnitin assignment.

Grading via Turnitin’s workflow (recommended)

  1. From the Classwork tab, locate and select the assignment you would like to grade.
  2. Select the Turnitin assignment to launch Turnitin’s submission list for the assignment.
  3. Select the similarity score for the student submission you’d like to launch. This will launch the Similarity Report.
  4. Apply the grade to the assignment in the header of the Similarity Report.

If you are using a rubric to grade the assignment, view our Grading with rubrics and grading forms guidance for more information.

Grading via Google Classroom’s workflow

  1. Select the Review Work button to launch Google Classroom’s grading workflow.

  1. You can grade the assignment by entering a value in the Grade field. To open the Similarity Report in a new tab and grade the assignment via Turnitin, you can select the Open Submission button.

This is an info callout. Grades entered directly in Google Classroom will not pass back to Turnitin.

Returning graded submissions to students

After grading an assignment, the grade given is in a draft state. This means that the student cannot see their grade. You can see this indicated by the Not returned text at the top right of this view.

The Feedback release date controls when students can view their feedback and grade in Turnitin. Returning the grade in Google Classroom controls when students can see the grade in the Google Classroom interface.

You can return an individual grade by selecting the Return button at the top right. Alternatively, if you select the dropdown arrow to the right of the button, you can return the grade for multiple submissions at once.
