Multi-factor authentication adds an extra verification step when users sign in to Turnitin. Administrators can require it for instructors, all users, or no users.
In this guide:
How multi-factor authentication works
When multi-factor authentication is required, users sign in with their email address and password as usual. Turnitin then sends a one-time passcode to their email address, which they must enter before they can access their account.
This additional step helps protect accounts if a password is lost, shared, or compromised.
Set up multi-factor authentication
To choose which users must use multi-factor authentication:
- Select Users from the left side panel.
- Select the Multi-factor authentication tab.
Before enabling multi-factor authentication, confirm that users have valid email addresses and can access their email accounts. Users without email access will be unable to sign in.
- Under Require multi-factor authentication for, select one of the following options:
- No users: No users are required to use multi-factor authentication.
- Instructors: Only instructors are required to use multi-factor authentication.
-
All users: All users are required to use multi-factor authentication.
- Select Save and Apply.
The selected users will be asked to enter a one-time passcode sent to their email address the next time they sign in.
Change who must use multi-factor authentication
You can update the requirement at any time:
- Select Users from the left side panel.
- Select the Multi-factor authentication tab.
- Select a different option under Require multi-factor authentication for.
- Select Save and Apply.
Selecting No users removes the multi-factor authentication requirement for all users.
