Spanish AI writing detection model update
Turnitin License(s): Feedback Studio w/Originality, Originality Check w/Originality, Similarity w/Originality
We've released an update to our AI writing detection model for Spanish submissions that improves detection of AI-generated content from newer large language models (LLMs), including GPT-5, GPT-5-mini, GPT-5-nano, GPT-5.1, Gemini-2.5-pro, Gemini 2.5 Flash, and tools based on these LLMs, while maintaining our low false positive rate.
This release only affects Spanish submissions.
This update does not introduce any visual changes to the AI writing report or changes to product functionality beyond the improved detection. If you currently license Turnitin Originality or iThenticate 2.0 and have AI writing detection enabled on your account, the updated model applies automatically — no action is required.
Note: This update does not retroactively update previously generated AI writing reports. To view scores generated by the updated model, existing submissions must be resubmitted.
What to expect
-
Why is Turnitin updating the model?
Given the rapid evolution of large language models, it is our goal to regularly update our AI writing detection model in an effort to keep pace with the latest generative AI tools. This update enhances detection of content generated by newer LLMs like GPT-5, GPT-5.1, Gemini-2.5-pro, and Gemini 2.5 Flash while maintaining our <1% false positive rate for documents with over 20% of AI-written text. -
Will this change my AI detection scores & why?
Previously generated AI writing reports are not affected by this update unless those papers are resubmitted after the update goes live. In that case, there may be a change in score as the AI writing detector will evaluate the papers based on the updated model and its capability to detect content from newer LLMs. With improved detection, this may result in higher AI scores on new submissions, but with every update, we prioritize not incorrectly flagging human-written text. -
Will existing submissions be checked retroactively?
No. This update applies only to new submissions. If you'd like to see a score generated by the updated model, you'll need to resubmit the document. -
Does this change my workflows?
No. This update does not introduce any changes to how the product looks or functionality beyond improved detection. There are no visual changes to the AI writing report, and no changes to your settings or configurations are required.

- Čeština
- Deutsch
- Español
- Français
- Italiano
- Nederlands
- Polski
- Português

Harvard and Chicago style guides for Turnitin Clarity’s citation assistant
Turnitin License(s): Feedback Studio w/ Turnitin Clarity add-on
On 17 September 2025, we released an AI-powered citation assistant for the student writing assignment type to help students become more confident and proficient writers. In addition to APA and MLA, it now also supports Harvard and Chicago style guides.
When enabled by their instructor, students can get citation feedback on their submission by selecting the Citation check button. The feature provides feedback on:
- Formatting to ensure that all citations/references match the specified style
- Mismatches between citations and references
- Missing citations
Citation feedback is delivered within the composition space, using the same pattern as grammar and spell check.
Additionally, students can prompt the AI assistant with questions, such as:
- How do I cite this source? (referencing pasted or selected text)
- Do my citations in the text match my references?
- Have I formatted my citations correctly?
Instructors can enable/disable citation help independently from Turnitin Clarity’s other AI assistant features, such as AI chat and grammar feedback.
Note: The citation check tool only supports English at this time, with support for other languages coming soon.

AI writing score visibility in the Authorship Report
Turnitin License(s): Feedback Studio w/Originality add-on, Originality Check w/Originality add-on, Similarity w/Originality add-on
Investigators & administrators can now view AI writing scores in the Authorship Report when generating these reports using the Turnitin paper ID, as well as in auto-generated reports. This enhancement allows investigators & administrators to see AI detection results alongside other integrity results, such as the Similarity score, without needing to open individual reports.

- Save time and streamline your investigations workflow by viewing AI writing scores directly in the Authorship Report, eliminating the need to open individual reports.
- Prioritize reviews more effectively by quickly identifying submissions that may require closer review based on their AI writing scores.
- Gain valuable insights into AI writing usage patterns across the entire corpus of reports, viewing AI writing scores at a glance, helping identify potential contract cheating or AI misuse.
How can you get access to this feature?
This feature is automatically available within our Authorship feature to all customers who license Turnitin Feedback Studio with Originality, Originality Check with Originality, or Similarity with Originality and have AI writing detection enabled on their accounts.

New Submission Options for Turnitin Clarity
Turnitin License(s): Feedback Studio w/ Turnitin Clarity add-on
Previously, for Turnitin Clarity assignments, students could submit their work as many times as they wished before the due date; however, the students’ papers and their Writing Reports were not available until after they had submitted and the due date had passed.
We implemented improvements to provide instructors with more flexibility in the options for students to submit student writing assignments.
Single or multiple submission options
Instructors have the option to control at the assignment level if students may submit their assignment only once, or to allow students to continue to submit until the due date.
When resubmission is enabled for an assignment, students may submit an assignment up to three times in a 24 hour period.
Immediate access to review submissions
Instructors may review students’ papers and Writing Reports immediately after submission, even before the due date, giving instructors earlier insight into their students’ writing process.
Instructors can also provide feedback immediately after submission; however, when multiple submissions are enabled, we recommend waiting until after the due date to provide feedback, as feedback will be deleted if a new version of the paper is submitted afterward.
Late submissions and extensions
While late submissions were previously enabled for all student writing assignments, instructors can now control whether or not late submissions are allowed at the assignment level. Instructors may also provide extensions for individual students.
Summary of changes:
- Instructors can review student writing assignment submissions immediately, even before the due date.
- Instructors can control at the assignment level if students can submit only once or multiple times per assignment.
- When multiple submissions are enabled, students may submit their assignment up to three times in a 24 hour time period.
- Instructors may allow late submissions on the assignment level.
- Instructors can add extensions for individual students.

Turnitin License(s): Feedback Studio w/ Turnitin Clarity add-on
Students can now choose between UK and US English when using Turnitin Clarity’s AI-powered writing tools.
For students accessing Turnitin via their LMS, the selected language automatically defaults to their LMS language setting when starting a Student Writing assignment with an AI-powered writing tool enabled.*
Students can also manually choose between UK and US English by clicking the Menu button in the top-right corner of their screen and selecting Select language for writing tools.
Students may then choose between US and UK English. The choice applies to all AI-powered writing assistant tools that may have been enabled by their instructor, including:
- Spelling and grammar check
- AI chat
- Citation assistance
*AI assistant tools are only supported in English; if the LMS language is not supported, the AI assistant selector will default to US English, but can be changed to UK English via the menu shown above.

AI detection integration into the Writing Report
Turnitin License(s): Feedback Studio w/ Turnitin Clarity add-on
Pasted text cards from Turnitin Clarity’s Writing Report currently show whether text pasted into the composition space from outside Clarity was changed or remained the same, if there are any matches from Turnitin databases, or if pasted text came from Turnitin Clarity’s AI assistant. Text pasted from within the document is not included in the pasted text findings or pinpointed on the writing timeline.
To help instructors understand how students may have used AI writing tools in their writing process, the Writing Report will soon include the results for Turnitin's AI writing detection in a pasted text card. The pasted text card will show when our model predicts a block of pasted text greater than 300 words was likely written or altered by AI.*
When this happens, the pasted text card will show:
- The overall percentage of the text estimated as likely originating from generative AI or likely AI generated, which may have further been bypassed or paraphrased
- The percentage breakdown of likely AI-generated, likely AI-bypassed, and likely AI-paraphrased text
- Highlights of the text estimated as likely originating from generative AI or likely AI generated, which may have further been bypassed or paraphrased
The complete AI Writing Report will still be available for the entire submission in the “AI Writing” tab.
*When both Turnitin Clarity and Originality are licensed and AI writing detection is enabled. AI writing detection is only available for English, Spanish, and Japanese submissions. AI paraphrase and bypasser detection are only available for English submissions.
