Understanding your Turnitin license

Turnitin has a variety of licenses and product add-ons to suit your institution’s needs. If you are unsure which version of Turnitin you use, check out the guidance below.

In this guide:

Turnitin Feedback Studio and Originality Check 

Turnitin Feedback Studio and Originality Check are two license types that allow users to access Turnitin via the Turnitin website or an integrated Learning Management System (LMS). Both licences support LTI 1.3 integrations.

Turnitin Feedback Studio - Has access to Turnitin’s full suite of products; the new and classic versions of the Standard Assignment, Similarity Report, grading and feedback tools, integrity flags, and Draft Coach.

Administrators of Turnitin Feedback Studio accounts have the ability to enable either the classic version of the Standard Assignment, the new version, or both at the same time allowing instructors to choose which version they use.

Originality Check - Has access to Turnitin’s academic integrity tools; the classic version of the standard assignment, Similarity Report, and integrity flags.

Similarity and SimCheck

Turnitin Similarity and SimCheck are two license types that allow users to access Turnitin via a dedicated login URL for their institution or an integrated Learning Management System (LMS). Both licences support LTI 1.1 integrations.

The dedicated login URL will look something like [your institution].turnitin.com and it will have been provided in your Turnitin welcome email.

Similarity - Has access to Turnitin’s academic integrity tools; the Similarity Report, integrity flags, and a range of repositories used to compare submissions against to determine the similarity score (Turnitin’s general repository of submissions, your institution’s private repository of submissions, the internet, and journals and publications.)

SimCheck - Has access to Turnitin’s Similarity Report and repositories used to compare submissions against to determine the similarity score (your institution’s private repository of submissions and the internet.)

Add-on products

Originality 

Originality offers a feature set of academic integrity add-ons for your institutional account:

  • AI writing and AI paraphrasing detection - includes an AI writing detection report
  • Authorship - includes contract cheating risk dashboard, submission metadata, and linguistic analysis
  • Extended repository options for comparing against submissions - includes a repository of ProQuest dissertations and theses

Clarity 

Clarity can only be added to Feedback Studio licenses

The Turnitin Clarity add-on offers a dedicated space for students to compose their work using the Student Writing assignment type.

Ideal for essays, reflections, and research papers, this assignment gives instructors a window into the writing process through the Writing Report. After the due date passes, the Similarity Report, grading and feedback tools, and AI Writing Report are also available, depending on your institution’s license type.

Paper to Digital 

Paper to Digital can only be added to Feedback Studio licenses

The Paper to Digital add-on allows instructors to scan and digitize paper-based work for online grading using the Handwritten Assignment assignment type.

The Handwritten Assignment enables digital grading workflows for paper-based assessments while integrating AI-assisted grading and answer grouping to streamline the grading process.
