Audio and video summary comments

Turnitin license(s): Feedback Studio

Instructors can now add an audio or video summary comment in Feedback Studio so students can review overall feedback alongside in-paper comments and QuickMarks.

Audio or video summaries allow instructors to provide personalized overall feedback alongside written summary comments, QuickMarks, and in-paper feedback. Audio and video recordings can be up to five minutes long and are available for students to review when viewing their Similarity Report.

Instructors can access audio or video summary comments from the Summary tab in the Feedback section of the Similarity Report.

For video summaries, instructors can choose background effects before recording, including blur and replacement options. Captions are automatically generated after upload, and video summaries also include a downloadable video option once processing is complete.

Submission Management: download all reports and files for multiple submissions

Turnitin license(s): Feedback Studio

Administrators can now download all reports and files associated with multiple submissions in a single action using the new All reports and files download option in Submission Management.

This enhancement streamlines submission management workflows by allowing administrators to download submission files and reports together, reducing the need to download items individually.

Customize AI chat responses in Clarity assignments

Turnitin license(s): Clarity add-on

Instructors can now customize how the AI chat supports students during the writing process in Clarity assignments. This includes adjustable levels of helpfulness and response complexity, with the ability to preview sample responses before enabling settings.

By default, the AI chat asks questions to help students reflect on their ideas and provides feedback on assignment and rubric alignment. Instructors can also choose to enable additional support options, including planning and brainstorming help, illustrative examples, revision suggestions, and proofreading assistance.

Instructors can additionally select the complexity level of AI responses using one of three options:

  • Foundational for simpler language and explanations of terms
  • Standard for standard academic language and sentence structures
  • Advanced for more advanced academic language and discipline-specific conventions

Assignment creation restricted for LMS-managed classes and login issue resolved

Turnitin license(s): Feedback Studio, Originality Check

We’ve introduced an update to how assignments are created for LMS-integrated classes, alongside a fix for a recent login issue affecting some users.

Assignment creation restricted for LMS-managed classes
For classes originally created through an LMS (such as Canvas, Moodle, or Blackboard), assignments can no longer be added directly from turnitin.com or turnitinuk.com. Assignment creation and management must now be completed within the LMS.

This change helps ensure data accuracy by preventing synchronisation issues between platforms, and improves security by reducing the risk of unauthorised access or data inconsistencies. Assignments created in the LMS will continue to sync automatically with Turnitin for reporting and viewing.

If users want to manage assignments both in the LMS and directly on the Turnitin website, they will need to create a new class within the website and manage it separately. This update only applies to LMS-managed classes. Classes created directly on turnitin.com or turnitinuk.com are not affected.

Resolved login issue
We also resolved an issue that impacted some users when logging into turnitin.com and turnitinuk.com. We apologise for any disruption this may have caused and appreciate your patience while this was addressed.

2026 April 28

Improved active student list download performance

Turnitin license(s): Feedback Studio, Originality Check

We’ve implemented a performance fix to improve the experience of downloading the active student list.

This update improves download performance for all users, regardless of account size.

2026 April 22

Updated assignment setting for submitting any file type

Turnitin license(s): Feedback Studio, Originality Check

We’ve updated the name of the assignment setting previously labeled Allow unsupported file types to Allow submission of any file type.

This updated language is intended to provide clearer guidance to instructors when configuring assignment settings.

The setting now only appears in Assignment Details for instructors when enabled, and is no longer shown to students in Assignment Details.

2026 April 22

Warning banner added for invalid assignment extensions

Turnitin license(s): Feedback Studio, Originality Check

We’ve added a warning banner to the assignment extensions workflow to help prevent extensions from being created outside of an assignment’s availability window.

Instructors will now receive a warning message if they attempt to add an extension that falls outside of the assignment availability dates, and they will not be able to proceed until the extension dates are valid.

2026 April 14

Resolved issue causing unresponsive Similarity Report

Turnitin license(s): Feedback Studio, Originality, Similarity

We’ve resolved a technical issue that caused the Similarity Report to become unresponsive for some users when selecting Try the new Similarity Report from within the Classic Report view.

This issue was limited to the report viewing experience and did not impact submission processing or data integrity. All submissions were processed correctly, and all data remains secure and intact.

No action is required. Users who previously experienced a blank or unresponsive screen when accessing the new report can now switch between report views without issue.

We sincerely apologise for any disruption this may have caused to your workflow. Thank you for your patience as we worked to get this fixed quickly.

2026 April 13

Bug fixes for shared rubrics visibility and language consistency

Turnitin license(s): Feedback Studio

We’ve resolved two issues to improve rubric visibility and language consistency across the platform.

Shared rubrics visibility for admins

Fixed an issue where account-level shared rubrics were not visible to all administrators. Admins can now view rubrics created by other admins when those rubrics have been shared across the account.

Language setting preserved when accessing section classes

Fixed an issue where the selected language was not retained when instructors accessed section classes. The correct language setting is now consistently applied when navigating to these classes.

Headers, footers, and page numbers in the Turnitin Clarity writing space

Turnitin license: Feedback Studio w/ Clarity add-on

To further support the formatting and citation needs of students writing in Turnitin Clarity, the option to add the following pagination-based editing features will soon be available in the formatting toolbar of Turnitin Clarity’s writing space:

  • Page numbers
  • Headers and footers

As a reminder, footnotes became available on 14 January 2026.

Important to note is the editor will remain pageless. Students can use the “Preview” button at the top right corner of the writing space to see how their paper, including all pagination-based options, will appear upon submission.

Headers, footers, and page numbers are controlled in the “Insert header and footer” modal, available from the formatting bar.

Improvements to Clarity's writing space

Turnitin license: Feedback Studio w/ Clarity add-on

  1. Prevent quote blocks within quote blocks
  • Previously, when a student working in Clarity’s composition space selected the Insert block quote button in the toolbar, and then clicked the same button again, a nested quote block was created within the original quote block.
  • Now, when clicking the Insert Block Quote button multiple times, the block quote is added and then removed, instead of creating nested block quotes. This issue is now resolved and working as intended.
  1. Preserve text formatting on new lines
  • Previously, there was an issue where formatting (such as fonts, font sizes, etc.) was not preserved when authors would create a new line, navigate away from the new line via keyboard or mouse, then return to the newline and start typing. The text formatting would revert to defaults.
  • Now, the formatting set by the student is preserved on the new line. This issue is resolved and working as intended.
  1. Table formatting issue resolved
  • Previously, tables created in Clarity’s editor were distorted when submitted as PDFs.
  • Now, this issue is  resolved. Tables will render as expected in student submissions and downloads.
  1. Arabic alignment issue with lists, quotes, and indents resolved
  • Previously when entering text in Arabic, certain formatting elements were aligned incorrectly, including bulleted and numbered lists, block quotes, and hanging indents.
  • Now, this issue is resolved and working as expected for Arabic text.
  1. Two Improvements to footnote editing
  • When selecting a footnote in the footnote editing area at the bottom of the document, the document now automatically jumps to the corresponding location within the body text.
  • Previously, using the Backspace key in the footnote area would cause multiple footnotes to be selected. This issue is now resolved and working as expected.

2026 March 20

Accessibility improvements to Feedback Studio workflows

Turnitin license: Feedback Studio

As part of our ongoing commitment to accessibility, we’re rolling out a series of updates across Feedback Studio.

Customers may notice small changes to parts of the platform, including website workflows and the classic Standard Assignment experience. These updates are designed to improve navigation, usability, and overall accessibility for all users.

While many of these changes are subtle, they contribute to a more seamless, robust, intuitive, and inclusive experience.

2026 March 18

Updated assignment creation flow to prevent accidental data loss

Turnitin license(s): Feedback Studio

We updated the assignment creation process for new standard and Clarity assignments by removing the Go back button and replacing it with a Cancel button that opens a confirmation modal.

Previously, selecting Go back took users back to the assignment picker without warning, which could result in lost progress. This update helps prevent accidental data loss by clearly warning users before they exit assignment creation.

This change was also applied to submission search and TFS Classic assignments when accessed through the assignment picker.

Turnitin Clarity’s AI assistant available in multiple languages

Turnitin license: Feedback Studio w/ Turnitin Clarity add-on

The AI chat functionality is available for student writing assignments in 19 additional languages When enabling the AI chat for an assignment, instructors may select a default language for the AI chat. The AI tool language selection applies to all AI tools, and that grammar and citation check remain supported in English only at this time, with support for other languages coming at a later date.

2026 March 11

Turnitin license: Feedback Studio w/ Turnitin Clarity add-on

The citation check now supports Harvard and Chicago in addition to APA and MLA. When enabled by their instructor, students can get citation feedback on their submission by selecting the Citation check button, and it is delivered within the composition space, using the same pattern as grammar and spell check.

2026 March 4

Download a single submission or report from the Submission List

Turnitin license(s): Feedback Studio

Instructors can now download a single student submission and/or associated reports directly from the More menu in the submission list. This makes it easier to access individual files without leaving the list view.

2026 March 3

Students can download digital receipts from the assignment inbox

Turnitin license: Feedback Studio, Originality Check

We’ve fixed an issue that prevented students using Classic assignments from downloading digital receipts directly from the assignment inbox. Previously, students had to open the submission report to download their receipt.

Students can now once again download digital receipts directly from the inbox.

Instructors with hyphenated names can now be added to accounts

Turnitin license: Feedback Studio, Originality Check

We resolved an issue where administrators were unable to add an instructor if the instructor’s first or last name included a hyphen.

Previously, the system displayed the error message: “Invalid Characters [=, +, -, @]”, preventing the instructor from being added to the account.

Administrators can now successfully add instructors with hyphenated names.

2026 February 12

Users created via integrations can now edit their User Info page

Turnitin license: Feedback Studio, Originality Check

We resolved an issue where users created through an integration (such as an LMS) were unable to edit their User Info page on turnitin.com and turnitinuk.com.

This issue previously prevented affected users from enabling key features, including Quick Submit.

Footnotes in the Turnitin Clarity writing space

Turnitin license: Feedback Studio w/ Turnitin Clarity add-on

Footnotes are now supported in Turnitin Clarity. Students can add footnotes directly from the formatting toolbar in the writing space to support citation and formatting needs.

The editor remains pageless during writing. Footnotes appear at the bottom of the document while a student is composing, and are automatically placed as page-level footnotes when the paper is submitted and viewed by an instructor or exported as a PDF.

AI Writing score in the Authorship Report

Turnitin license: Originality add-on

Investigators can now view a student’s AI Writing score for each submission directly in the Authorship Report.

The AI Writing score is shown in the Submission section and Essay Integrity section of the Authorship Report, though it can be filtered into any table in the other sections if the Investigator wishes. Scores are shown only for licensed customers who have AI Writing enabled. To view the AI Writing scores, the user must first review and accept a disclaimer that will be displayed at the top of the report upon opening.

New Submission Options for Turnitin Clarity

Turnitin license: Feedback Studio w/ Turnitin Clarity add-on

Previously, for Turnitin Clarity assignments, students could submit their work as many times as they wished before the due date; however, their papers and Writing Reports were not available until after they had submitted and the due date had passed.

We implemented improvements to provide instructors with more flexibility in how students submit writing assignments.

Single or multiple submission options

  • Instructors can control at the assignment level whether students can submit only once or multiple times per assignment.
  • When multiple submissions are enabled, students may submit their assignments up to three times in a 24-hour period.

Immediate access to review submissions

  • Instructors can review student writing assignment submissions immediately, even before the due date.

Instructors can also provide feedback immediately after submission; however, when multiple submissions are enabled, we recommend waiting until after the due date to provide feedback, as feedback will be deleted if a new version of the paper is submitted afterward.

Late submissions and extensions

Turnitin’s upgraded administrator experience is now live

Turnitin licenses: Feedback Studio, Originality Check

Turnitin administrator accounts have now been migrated to our improved administrator experience. The administrator workflow is designed to help institutions manage their accounts in a secure and organized way. What’s changed:

  • Administrators access the administrator workflow through their own dedicated login, separate from other user types. This separation, alongside two-factor authentication, helps maintain account security.
  • Each account can include up to 5 administrators, allowing account management responsibilities to be shared. Customizable account permissions can be set when adding administrators to ensure their access matches their responsibilities of the role.
  • The administrator workflow is built on a modern foundation designed for continued improvements and future updates.
  • The configuration process for LTI 1.3 integrations has been simplified.

More flexible control of AI writing for sub-accounts

    Turnitin license(s): Originality add-on

Primary administrators can now allow sub-admins to enable the AI writing detection feature for their child accounts. Previously, AI detection could only be enabled by a top-level administrator for the entire institution.

With this update, primary account administrators can turn off AI detection at the institution-level while still permitting sub-account administrators to enable it for their child accounts from the account settings. Sub-admins will also gain visibility into AI writing statistics for their sub-account and child accounts where AI detection is enabled.

This update offers greater flexibility and transparency in how AI writing detection is managed across institutions.

The existing functionality for primary admins and sub-admins to turn off AI detection as needed remains unchanged.

    AI writing score visibility

For institutions that have access to and have enabled Turnitin’s AI writing detection, a new AI writing score column is available within the inbox of the classic Standard Assignment in Turnitin Feedback Studio, and within the My Files section of Turnitin Similarity.

Before you can see the AI writing scores, you must first accept a disclaimer. This will appear the next time you access your assignment or folder and only needs to be accepted once. If the disclaimer is declined, the AI score will remain blurred within the submission list.

Resubmission settings - New Standard Assignment

    Turnitin license: Feedback Studio

Instructors can now disable student resubmissions in the details tab of the assignment settings. Resubmissions will be enabled by default but can now be turned off at assignment creation or while editing existing assignments.

This does not affect the resubmission settings within the classic version of the standard assignment.

Revealing student identities in anonymous grading assignments - New Standard Assignment

    Turnitin license: Feedback Studio

When anonymous grading is enabled for an assignment, instructors must provide a reason to reveal a student’s name. Instructors can reveal the identity of students individually, or for the full assignment by disabling the setting. Instructors will be prompted to provide a reason for both individual student or assignment-wide reveals.

This does not affect the anonymous grading workflow within the classic version of the standard assignment.

    • The feedback release date field is now editable after the original date has passed.
    • Date and time inputs have been combined into a single field in assignment settings.

    Updated access restrictions via SSO

    Turnitin license(s): Similarity, SimCheck

Turnitin Administrators can now manage single-sign-on (SSO) access to their organization’s Turnitin account when using Turnitin Similarity or SimCheck based on user attributes from your identity provider (like department, role, or location).

    This release will help administrators:

    • Streamline access management by leveraging existing identity provider groups and attributes
    • Maintain stronger security by ensuring only authorized team members can access the account
    • Reduce manual user management with automated, attribute-based access control

When enabling SSO, administrators can specify the attribute pairs in their SSO configuration that define who should have access. To start using SSO for your organization, visit our help center to raise a ticket, and our team will help you through the setup process.

Turnitin license(s): Feedback Studio, Originality Check

We’ve updated the submitted works visibility features in the new, enhanced Similarity Report experience. Now, when viewing the Sources list with Show overlapping sources on:

    1. Source cards will indicate the number of submitted works (currently “student papers” for Feedback Studio, Originality Check, and Originality Check+ licenses) or similar URLS matched.
    2. Selecting View other sources under the matched text within a source card displays the list of all submitted works or similar URLs containing the same text.
    3. For accounts with Submission release enabled, and text is matched with another submission to the same institution, instructors can download the matched submission by selecting Download Source File from the Source Details.

New AI detection writing detection capabilities for Japanese submissions

    Turnitin license(s): Originality add-on

    English 日本語

Turnitin is excited to release its AI writing detection capabilities in Japanese to help educators uphold academic integrity for Japanese language submissions.

When AI writing is enabled by administrators, submissions written in Japanese can now be processed for likely AI-generated text. Once submitted, an AI writing report is generated for instructors to review. Any previously submitted assignments can be checked with our AI writing detector when they are re-submitted to Turnitin and you have AI writing enabled for your account.

Please note our Japanese AI writing model is a separate model from our English AI writing and Spanish AI writing models. Turnitin’s Japanese AI writing detection capabilities have been trained with Japanese language writing and trained to detect text likely generated with GPT-4 (version 0613), GPT4-o (released 13/05/2024 & 06/08/2024), and GPT-4o-mini (released on 18/07/2024) large language models. As our Japanese, Spanish, and English AI detection capabilities differ, please read more about how our Japanese AI detection capabilities work

The Japanese AI writing report is built into our existing Similarity Report experience. Access the AI writing report from the top menu by selecting the AI Writing tab, which contains the overall percentage of text detected as likely AI.

The Document Details setting is now centralized for accounts with Turnitin Feedback Studio and Originality

Turnitin license(s): Feedback Studio with Originality add-on

We have centralized the Document Details setting, which enables additional metadata in the Similarity Report, between Turnitin Feedback Studio and Originality. Previously, the administrators had to update the setting in both Feedback Studio and Originality to achieve congruent functionality. Now administrators need only to update the consolidated setting in one place (either Feedback Studio or Originality) in order to apply to all environments.

ETS e-Rater removed from all Turnitin products

Turnitin license(s): Feedback Studio, Originality Check

Educational Testing Services (ETS) will no longer be supporting its e-rater grammar service in 2025. As a result, Turnitin has removed e-rater from all of its products.

Please note that any ETS feedback previously generated before e-rater was removed will still be accessible within the Similarity Report. However, if a new report is generated, the feedback will be removed, and it won't be possible to retrieve it.

In the absence of grammar checking provided via e-rater, we recommend using Turnitin Draft Coach to provide grammar checks for students while drafting in Microsoft Word on the Web or Google Docs. If you are interested in using Draft Coach, please reach out to your account manager.
